There's a million and one monitor and soundcard threads.

Here's my synth wishlist:
Roland SH-101
Roland JP-8080
Korg MS-20
Novation BassStation
303 clone
Working sampler (Akai or E-mu)

A Virus or a Nord would be in there if I had the dough. And Massive VST, obviously.

monitors-- depends on what sounds good to you. up at that range i'd look at adams, genelecs, or maybe even (gasp) multiple pairs if you find 2 that give you different info but like equally.

interface depends on what you're running (mac or pc). If you're on mac, I love my metric halo 2882; i'd maybe consider the apogee symphony or duet, and i'd have the MOTU line farther down.

hardware synth: i'm really into the SH201 these days. for $600 you're getting a really interesting tool. if you can get 2, then the moog voyager is way up there as well.

also set aside some $ for a MIDI interface and, shit, if you're recording some hardware, why not get a really sexy pre/eq/dynamics setup and a decent mic as well (i'm partial to chandler tg1 and the distressor... but that's close to 2/3 of your budget). make sure to get 2 of everything so that you can record in stereo ;) .

plugs-- are you looking for instruments, or effects? instruments, i'm pretty impressed by the whole NI line, especially kore/komplete. effects... sherman filterbank, the McDSP plugs, and for engineering tools the sonalksis and URS plugs. Or, a UAD system.

not really the best forum to ask about hardware tbh. Try discogs.com for some good hardware feedback.

VST's? download a pack of 500 like I did and save urself some money. If your getting a nice synth why bother with soft synths?

monitors, go down turnkey with a CD and spend a few hours listening to them all.

Nice one lads,

I want the best of both worlds, so im gonna invest in both soft and hard sytns.

Yea im thinking of going to to turnkey this weekend, See what deals i can get.

I wanna get some more legit soft sythns tho. You end spending more time on it if you have payed for it.

My heart is set on Mackie HR624 or the 800's

Thanks again, deffo look into input

What about a analogue compressor?

Any info, recommendations or tips on buying these?

They're pricey for the good ones. Joemeek would be where you wanted to start looking. But I still compress in the box.

:D: plus there's the warm fuzzy feeling of actually supporting the people who put their time into this stuff.

I think the list of stuff I rationally ought to get next is approximately:
* adequate rompler for vaguely realistic sounds, probably Wusikstation
* decent monitors
* microphone for recording real instruments and funny noises
* small h/w mixer for flexible routing between turntables, computer, synth, speakers etc without having to rewire everything
* UAD card for nice compressors, EQ etc
* Reaktor

The list of stuff I'd be kind of tempted by even though I know I don't really need it is longer. It's mostly hardware or real instruments, and includes a TR-606, Korg M1 (or maybe M1R), spring reverb, valve amp / distortion, SH-101 or similar, random percussion instruments, space echo, oldskool tape machines, big analog desk to run all this stuff through...

MONITORS MONITORS MONITORS.

first. then i'd get a dope soundcard/interface, then a synth (since i've got about $10,000 in this hypothetical world)

Apogee I/O conversion, Dynaudio Monitors, UAD card(s), CSR, PSP 42, Logic.

I wouldn't bother with any hardware synths these days.
