im sure its sumthing to do with it being connected by usb cable,
as apposed to being directley in a pci slot.
its not that much effort to fit an internal

External ones are better because all the random shit going on in all the random cards inside your computer has less chance of interfering with the audio part of the card.

guess it depends on what you are trying to do... alot of ins and outs, firewire would be better than usb, probably less latency issues... i use an internal card with 8 ins and outs and sometimes get noise that i'm not sure i would get if i used an external interface.

go firewire/usb. lotta noise in anything internal. FW gives you more options but if all you need is a few ins and outs, no problem at all w/ usb.

PCI w/ breakout box is aight too as the adac happens in the box.
doesn't have to be usb/firewire.
PCI w/ breakout tend to be cheaper than USB and much cheaper than firewire.

beware usb1.1 boxes have limited bandwith, meaning that for a 4x4 box, you will need to compromize on bit rate (ie 44khz/16bit) if you want full 4 in/4 out activity. 96khz/24 bit will restrict you to 2 channels in OR 2 channels out if I remember correctly.

I like the M-audio delta pci series. I have a delta 66 - it was $100 and it works great. If you want higher quality, get a dedicated adac and then hook the output and input spdif channels up to the adac. This will give you better quality input and output than virtually any soundcard on the market. Dedicated adacs are the way to go if you really need that extra bit of quality in/out.

basically internal cards cost less......they are meant for laptops your paying and portability in a lot of the card.

get an M-Audio Audiophile 2496

best bang for buck soundcard personally.....i know a fuckload of people who use them and they are solid.

the delta66 and delta44 are good too......whole range range.

and they are dead cheap....theres loads listed brand new on ebay.
all up it will be like 70-80pounds to ur door from usa

they are so easy to install mate......unscrew the case, slot the card in.
almost anyone could do it, if your worried, im sure they'll be a video on youtube on how to put in PCI cards.
or some sort of tutorial on google.

blap

That is not true tbh. All internal devices will run faster and more stable than external.

If you have a desktop PC and have spare slots then go for internal everytime. External hardware should only be used if you have a laptop or really require the hardware to be external for whatever reason.

pci cards have the fastest data transfer rates, then its usb 2.0, then firewire (IEEE 1394), then usb 1.1

that is why I prefer PCI cards...

less latency

Never had any probs with my 'slow' ass firewire, even with an external hard drive and a DSP box using the same bus.

I was very close to buying one, but now just saving to get a better usb one... Gunna be using it to plug in Guitars and Vocals... Still researching tho and trying to find the best, most cost effective solution... Which isn't always the cheapest card, because I only want to buy once and buy right..

It wont be that slow but if you are use to faster its never nice going to something that might be slower eh?

i don't think anyone's hit the nail on the head here.

A good internal sound card should reject most, if not all interference. Otherwise its just not fit for its intended purpose. anyway, there are so many factors. good drivers, good dacs, good quality components all make a big difference.

And if you're not using balanced cables, well, there's another proverbial kettle of fish right there.

I'm sure if you asked the likes of RME they wouldn't say "oh, don;t use our PCI cards, they;re really noisy and shit, we just make them to con people out of 300 odd quid".
