Are you saying that dancehall style vocals are a refreshing change from mid-range boredom? I suppose you're emphasising that the vocals need to be integrated into the tune rather than slapped on, but really I'm finding a lot of these ragga vocaled tunes a bit stale now. Don't think I've heard a REALLY decent one since 'Burning'. Though 'Calm Down' is good.

As for funky- haven't heard much yet but the one Supa D set I've got is enjoyable, some of the tunes on it are great. Bland, easy-listening perhaps but who really cares, its music to dance to isnt it. I think I see a house influence definitely developing in dubstep too, you can almost pray for a fusing of a lot of disparate but similarly tempod genres into something new and unifying.

Quest - Deep Inside...heavily house influenced, or so I thought anyways...

Everything's a change from mid range boredom but i'm saying here that original UK productions are more interesting i think than just a cheeky refix, though i like those too.

This Marcus Nasty set is the most interesting one i've heard yet. soca beats, garage swing and also some grimey tracks at the end: http://www.sendspace.com/file/u7o2z2

A lot of these dancehall vocal tunes ARE mid range boredom tunes if you take the vocal away though lol Some of the UK refixes sound a lot like Mavado tunes too

Still, I'm not against them. As you say in the article (I think) if anything its the dub/reggae style of dubstep that's become really boring.

On a (Side) note- is that Riko vocal of the Appleblim tune ever going to come out on wax? Suppose I should ask blim really innit. And big up on The Bits getting on soulfood 3! These are the kind of UK homespun vocal tunes I'm really interested in, both in terms of beats and vocals...

Cheers for that set I'll check it out

i'm saying that Cotti's two original vocal tunes with uk grime mcs in a dancehall style are an exciting leap onwards in originality than just refixes. big up cotti.

as for "Fear," i think appleblim wasn't happy with how the vocal sat on the beat....

I think whats really best about these kind of tunes especially Calm Down, Burning and Gangster 4 Life is that they're straight up anthems.

I reckon the Flowdan/Bug collabs are definitely the most original and powerful vocal dubstep tunes around, the Skeng RMX even more so. The new one Kode played at DMZ Saturday sounded ridiculous
