"AES Drax in Yorkshire pumps smoke out of the tallest chimneys in the country. The coal-fired power plant emits more CO2 – 22.8 million tonnes annually – than the 100 least-industrialised nations combined. Drax provides 7% of Britain’s electrical power. Burning fossil fuels to turn steam turbines and create electricity accounts for a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, and coal has the highest carbon content of all fuels"

"Chinstrap penguins perch on top of an eroded blue iceberg near Candlemas Island. Icebergs are simply fragments of glaciers, and last October an iceberg half the size of Greater London ‘calved’ from the vast Pine Island Glacier (Pig). Over the past 20 years, Pig has been thinning at 40 times the previous stable rate. Antarctica holds enough ice to raise global sea levels by 57m. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has projected sea level rises by 2100 of between 20 and 80cm"

"Cattle wander around their still-smouldering pastureland in Rondonia, Brazil, one of the many huge tracts of the Amazon rainforest which are being torched to make way for agriculture. In the first five years of this century alone, Brazil burnt an area the size of England and Wales. Deforestation is responsible for 17% of human greenhouse gas emissions [GHGE], mainly through the burning of wood, which results in even fewer trees to absorb CO2"

"ALASKA: The US Geological Survey found that in Alaska 99% or higher of glaciers are 'retreating or stagnating'"

"SWITZERLAND: The Aletsch glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps. A survey last year reported that, since the 1850s, glaciers in the region had declined by 35% in 1970 and by 50% in 2000."

Worrying about climate change doesn't help anyone unless you actually take action to reduce your carbon footprint

educating oneself is important is one is going to take action

The same mag had a decent article on this, all about checking locations, cooking times and methods n that. Common sence, but alot of people seem to think "local, will save the world" while driving in a 4x4 2 miles to the farm shop.

"Here's a list of simple things you can do immediately:

These will start to reduce your contribution to global warming. The items in this list will cost you no money at all and will in fact save you money.

* Sign up to a green energy supplier, who will supply electricity from renewable sources (e.g. wind and hydroelectric power) - this will reduce your carbon footprint contribution from electricity to zero

* Turn it off when not in use (lights, television, DVD player, Hi Fi, computer etc. etc. ...)

* Turn down the central heating slightly (try just 1 to 2 degrees C)

* Turn down the water heating setting (just 2 degrees will make a significant saving)

* Check the central heating timer setting - remember there is no point heating the house after you have left for work

* Fill your dish washer and washing machine with a full load - this will save you water, electricity, and washing powder

* Fill the kettle with only as much water as you need

* Unplug your mobile phone as soon as it has finished charging

* Defrost your fridge/freezer regularly

* Do your weekly shopping in a single trip

* Hang out the washing to dry rather than tumble drying it

* Go for a run rather than drive to the gym "

Move out from this freaking cold dark country or learn how to survive on roots and berries the whole winter :/

or just kill yourself (probably the most beneficial thing that can be done immediately)

Although, seeing the world collapse might be worth waiting for.

Stunning pictures, feels a little bit odd to find images of destruction so beautiful.

"Going, Going…: Peru's Quelccaya ice cap is the largest in the tropics. If it continues to melt at its current rate—contracting more than 600 feet (182.8 meters) a year in some places—it will be gone by 2100, leaving thousands who rely on its water for drinking and electricity high, dry, and in the dark."

Sorry to be a little bit off topic here, but I've got the same thing about industrial landscapes.

These are taken by Edward Burtynsky, wastewater running through deserted land is coloured by iron particles. Looks like the Earth is bleeding... And at the same time it looks disturbingly beautiful.

gorgeous .

reminds me of the werner herzog film "lessons of darkness" about the devastated oil fields of kuwait .

i heard him speak about it in a screening last year, where he mentioned that it was part of his intention to capture the beauty and poetry of destruction, wanted his imagery and camera moves etc convey emotion in a way that makes the devastation more striking because of it's beauty.

heres a clip, not the best one but the only one i culd find

the jury is still out on climate change, there is evidence either way, i think it still makes sense to go green as somthing shit will happen.
al gores film is not sceintific fact, its a guess. its actually predicted to get colder over the next 10 years according to the met office.
fair play to amy for the post cos we as humans have not yet worked out what were fucking with,
