Dubstep Virgin

Post by jonnyt » Fri Mar 28, 2008 12:11 pm

Hey, I'm new to dubstep and need help getting hold of some essential releases. My music taste is pretty varied but is mainly electonic (autechre, aphex twin, four tet), with some rock (radiohead, pink floyd) and fairly mainstream hip-hop/ grime (roots manuva, wu-tang, nas, sway, dizzee).
I just heard my first dubstep album this week; Burial Untrue and it hit me like no other album I've heard in a long time. This was one of the first places I came to to find out more about what might become my new favourite type of music, I've had a look through a lot of threads but there are so many of them and so many people contributing, I'm not sure where to start.
Are there already threads covering these questions? Are there other albums with the same dark, brooding atmosphere as Untrue or is it a one-off?
What would you guys recommend to a dub-step virgin who's eager to hear a lot more?

Thanks in advance

If you like Burial then check out all the other releases on Hyperdub, lots of different sounds but the quality is always high. Tempa and Hot Flush have a multitude of good stuff as well.

tempa dubstep allstars compilations are probably a good place to start. mixed cd compilations with lots of tracks for your money. bear in mind you won't necessarily be able to get hold of all the tracks as full releases. some are unreleased/dubplate excloos.

Its a bit of a tricky one, there is plenty of deep atmospheric stuff going out there, but there isnt really any one place to look for it!

For me, mala is always a good start (although I would pretty much say that no matter what style I was recommending :P) but yeah other than that, release wise there just seems to be bits and pieces dotted about here and there!

Bristol has a wicked scene on the more minimal atmospheric stuff, definitely worth looking into skull disco/punch drunk (record labels).

See what happens from there I guess!

(My personal top tip though, something I just havent been able to get enough of is parsons release on dubline records recently, "empty houses" is one of my favourite bits of dubstep to date. So moody it hurts!)

I agree :) Been playin this one like crazy, it's gorgeous. Big up, moustache monster.

My advice- just listen.

Listen listen listen to subfm, and rinse- go to your local nights if you're lucky enough to have one and keep talking to people, you'll start to familiarize yourself with sounds. Myspace has been really helpful for me, tho artists are not very good about updating their players- but you get an idea of which producers play off each others' sounds and what direction they're going thanks to the whole 'degrees of seperation' aspect.

Oh and go ahead and get hooked on dubstepforum while yer at it- buncha geeks in here will school you proper ;)

Cheers for the advice.
Unfortunately, I'm living in Switzerland at the moment, won't be back in Brixton for at least a year, so live club opportunities are limited.
I suppose what I'm after is a handful of cd's I can buy online to see what I like before I start checking out massive resources like entire record labels and myspace etc.
Kind of like if someone expressed an interest in trip hop, you'd tell them to check out agreed classics like tricky maxinquaye and massive attack blue lines, then move onto more obscure stuff from there.

Not sure if dubstep is old enough to have 'classics' but here are a few albums I dig:

Boxcutter - Glyphic
Pinch - Underwater Dancehall
Kode 9 + Spaceape - Memories of the Future

Compilations are a good way to go if you just want to hear a range of producers and there are a fair amount of those:

Hot Flush's Space and Time compilation - I think, based on the tastes you stated, you would really like.

Tectonic Plates double CD - was one of the first things I purchased when I first started building my collection, it has a nice range of good dubstep and gave me a good starting point.

Science Faction Dubstep - Really nice tunes on here, too

Either 2 of the Box of Dub compilations on Soul Jazz as well.

DL Christine Vaccine's Meditate on the Bass Weight Mix as well. Super nice.

Burial is an anomaly in that theres no one else doing the style he does.

'Cyrus - from the shadows' album is sparse, dark and brooding as is 'moving ninja' stuff

http://www.myspace.com/movingninja

but if you want dark and brooding in a more up tempo malevolent less melancholic style I suggest vex'd - degenerate
