ok - so im trying to record a small sample from a record using audacity. im just using my new laptop which has a basic sound card with a speaker out and line in (which im using).

on my old laptop which was even more basic i would just plus my mixer into the line in, hit record and in the words of Champ Kind 'whammy' i would have my recording.

on my new laptop tho i keep getting an error and when i go into preferences for recording it wont recognise my line in and there seems to be no way of selecting it as there is nothin recognised in the drop down box - any ideas?

the problem could be a number of things...what error message are you getting?

what laptop are you using? (i ask because you say 'new laptop' and if it is a macbook...you will have to aggregate the audio interface in order to process line-in and line-out at once...which is fairly simple)

the error message says 'Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project smaple rate.'

and im using a fujitsu siemens amilo laptop running vista

The only thing i can think of is the obvious; sample rate be set at 44100 in preferences...which is the default, and that the correct audio device (audio I/O in preferences) is actually selected. other than that i'm a bit stuck. does windows sound recorder allow you to record in...be a good way to check if your soundcard isn't the problem.

i'm a mac user so i'm probably not the best person to answer this.

yeah windows sound recorder seems to be workin fine - just having problems recording in audacity

OK heres a couple things to do;

Right click on the volume icon in the bottom right of your screen.

Select Recording Settings..

Check what your default device is. If it isn't your Line IN that you are using, select it.

Open Audacity, click Edit and then Preferences.

Check sample rate 4.1 and then check the recording device is either or line in, or the default windows mapper. If one dosen't work try the other and vice versa.

I too am having big problems recording in vista. I have an external soundcard which is recieving data from my mixer and putting it out of the speakers, but no output into the PC. However, sounds FROM the PC enter the Soundcard and come out of the speakers O.K. Anyone got any ideas let me know (Sorry to slightly hijack your topic).

I think your problem might just be a simple compatability issue. I dont think Audacity has been updated to run on Vista. Its been a dead prog for years but was recently revived as a program for M-Audio and given a different name and handed out with their hardware.

Goldwave is another free (shareware) audio editor, one that apparently supports Vista.

it works fine on vista.

try compatibility mode maybe
