i'm really REALLY disappointed by how hard this preset is getting cained.

is it THAT hard to make a dope bass patch in massive? i mean come on... honestly...

Same. I couldnt beleive it when I first used Massive and worked out how easy it was to make a bassline. I havnt put much time into Massive but everything I got out of it just sounded like what other people have already done:(

i second that, a preset for me is just a template, i strip that fucker down.

my view will change when i have enough knowledge to go into a plugin and make the noise in my head from scratch.

Yeah definitely, if there's a preset that works then use it. I'd rather someone used a preset and came up with a good tune than fiddled around for ages getting a bass sound and then wrote shite with it

Most of the presets I have are fucking rubbish though has to be said

given that what sets electronic music apart from most other types of music is that its 50 percent about creating sounds, not just melodies and riddems, then surely using presets IS kind of lame? or at least not AS creative as making yr own.

but perhaps more of an immediate concern 2 producers is just the fact that if u release tracks with presets on sum tnuc will probably write a thread exposing u on a forum somewhere

even if u havent got a clue about synthesis u can tweak, modify and adjust them a bit at least, it aint that hard

and yeah, as pointed out most r shit anyway

Personally I'd only care if the preset didn't fit the tune.

Or if that particular synth sound was really the focus of the tune - I mean if I had some preset for a huge complex evolving ambient pad and I just stuck a clickity noise under it I'd feel that I could maybe have done more, but if I just want a basic plinky lead sound (or whatever) to play the tune I've had in my head for ages, I don't feel any particular need to flex my synthesis muscles just because I can.

FWIW, I almost always come up with my own sounds because I enjoy it and I like what I can acheive that way, but not everyone gets off on that and some people get far more out of melodies and rhythms and creating a vibe.

But then I kind of think that the idea that it's important to be a pure and driven artist in complete control of every aspect of your creation is a load of trumped up bollocks invented in the 19th century that's got annoyingly stuck into the popular imagination. A lot of the great renaissance painters (for instance) were pretty mercenary and had assistants to do a lot of the drudge work of painting (filling in backgrounds, details, all sorts of stuff), but they're still revered because they made paintings that move people and connect with people like not many other artists (include a lot of their asistants if they tried to do their own stuff) could.

Well I generally make my own, but sometimes if there's already a sound that's been created already that will suit my purpose then I'll use that. I get what you're saying, it's just that a lot of the time I hear someone that's obviously gone to a lot of effort getting a sound, but musically it's almost identical to so many other tracks, and to be honest some of my favourite electronic tunes aren't necessarily that sound design based anyway - listening to loads of old garage, the majority of the creativity seemed to be more in throwing the beat together than coming up with futuristic noises and the same could be said for old jungle too.
