Why why why?

Post by metalboxproducts » Fri Jun 09, 2006 10:19 am

Why is there a dfference in the time it takes to up laod a file and the time it take to down load a file? It takes me about five/ten mins to upload a single mp3 and about fifteen secs to download. I expect there isn't a simple answer for this and it probebly has something to do with conversion rates, but if any one knows (Boomnoise perhaps) it would be nice.

no, it doesn't have to do with conversion rates (or anything else that happens on your computer). It all depends on your internet provider I guess. With most of them, UL speed is much lower than DL speed. I for one have 2048 down and only 192 up. Everything above that, I just can't afford at the mom...

internet providers don't want you to use you're connection as a server or host for a website, coz every bit transporting costs money... therefore are most custom connections high down low up!
server connections are quit more expensive!

honestly, American, European, and Canadian tel.co's and ISP's are really holding things back as far as bandwith goes...but that's a different thread altogether =)

Japan and East Asia get sick speeds...no limits, and its affordable. just something to think about.

yes, they're converted (unfortunately, I have to say), but that happens *after* you've uploaded them, so the conversion doesn't affect your UL in anyway.

you mean think about moving to Japan? Fo sure...

I remember when I was in Canada for a year and Rogers started threatening to throw out all customers (who were paying for unlimited traffic) exceeding a limit of 60 Gigs per months. We were five people in the house and we we're like: "damn, we're fucked..."

So from what i can gather there isn't any technical necessity for the disparity. And the isp's would rather we consume(d l) rather than truly partisipate(ul) :o  fuckers

all you need is a college/uni/workplace with a decent connection. At our uni, we can upload at about 1 MB per sec, so I can live with my crappy isp at home

so if you're applying somewhere, that should be your main criterion 8)
