I'm going to start a new line of dubstep parties in London
& was hoping to get some feedback from the London scene

i'd love to see a night with some dubstep/electro/breaks mashup mixes, not just dubstep on it's own, although that's cool i just like a little variation in the mix. with some vj's aswell, nice to have something to watch when not freakin out on the dancefloor... safe

If you're not freaking out on the dancefloor, you're not listening to Dubstep. I play the stuff, and up until recently and when I play it out myself, I had only heard it on smaller systems. Trust me, it's all about freaking out on the floor.

There are a few cats on this very site that are mixing dub/electro/mnml, etc...

this is a good point... but I bet i could find something to stick on the wall that wouldn't look too out of place!

A vj IMHO would create a gooooooood vibe...and Bad Soundsystem too....

Just a room filled with the sound of Dubstep. Nothing more, no extra DJ Box or lights. Just everything on a level. yasimeh

well, it's the usual "keep it as it is" debate...

The more popular it gets, the more likely people are going to fuck up dubstep beyond recognition. Mainstream producers will add vocals, MCs will want to spit all over the best grooves. More and more posh kids will turn up to DMZ. It really will never be the same again.

I'd say a bit of projection was the least of your troubles!

Unless you start looking at things another way, that vocals/mcs/visuals/light production might actually ADD something to the music, or the atmosphere. I'm not saying it's going to be immediately successful, I'm just saying when the inevitable happens, you might be a little bit less pissed off!

I'm not too worried about dubstep going mainstream, honestly... if dubstep never becomes mainstream, then the DJ's and promotors aren't doing a good job.

Totally get what you're saying there, but I don't think
expansion necessarily = compromise, at this point.


As for the night, it's just a decision - do you stick to the blueprint & risk creating a
weaker FWD, or move in a new direction & risk losing some of your core fanbase?
I'm open on this. It's up for debate.

me too! totally haven't made my mind up at all, I'm excited at the possibilities!

ps, if you were forced to have visuals at a dubstep night, what would be least offensive?

Definitely minimal, but what sort of content? Urban? Organic? Human? Machine?

I have an old oscilloscope lying around here somewhere which measures bass frequencies. Imagine a big green waveform reacting to the music...

also, I have to mention, as a someone who knows a lot of disabled clubbers, dubstep is perfect for deaf clubbing- as you can feel the music as much as you can hear it.

no point in having another weekly or monthly without having the the sound system as the absolute priority. dmz and fwd are already the standards.

it's a really bad look when people throw parties promoting dnb/grime or dubstep as " the sound of the underground", when they've spent more money on the flyers than the amp and speakers. first things first. if people hear this music on crap speakers then imo, you're doing more harm than good as a promoter of the sound.

The system should definitely be a priority. If you want to show people what dubstep is about, you've got to get the bass... (Although personally I think the standard was set by Pinch and Dissident in Bristol and I wasn't too impressed by the plastic people rig when I went to FWD).

But lights/projection could be great, if done creatively by someone who wants to add to the music, rather than simply do their own thing. Andytwig's wobbly green line sounds wicked - simple and minimal, but highly effective if done well. Which would make it a lot similar to dubstep itself... Obviously the near total darkness of DMZ/FWD is about as minimal and effective as you can get, and I like it a lot, but that doesn't mean it's the only recipe.
