Does anyone know who the other half of Dub War (of Tempa04 fame) was?
Discogs doesnt have that information, but the Tempa website says Benny Ill was only half of the outfit
Id love to hear more stuff in that vein...

That was the first dubstep 12" I bought, both tunes are wicked, still think its one of the best dubstep records I've got. Googled it up as I was interested, but nowt as far as I could see.
Did find this Tempa mix on the old blogspot.dubstep site though, which has loads of old tempa tunes on it.

Know what you mean, the earlier dubstep wasn't quite so heavy and still had that garage sound to it, which I think made it more dancefloor-friendly but still be quite innovative, but it had more light and shade to it. I'd try the early tempa, ghost, shelflife and southwest records if you can find them, sure there's a few mixes up here.
I'd contact Blackdown or Conspira for info, they're pretty clued up on the movers and shakers over the years.

cheers man, ive been on a monster 2nd hand binge for months now, picking up some very nice things along the way. I think what i in fact meant though, was...
I'd like to hear Benny Ill making tearing, dubbed out, subbed-up quasi-2step again!
Man is the don, its all about more new music from the originators, I can hardly wait for the forthcoming Horsepower dubs to hit the radio. We should start a petition (or something equivalent with less of a pathetic tinge) to get el-b back making dubstep/garage...he can use all the female vocals and uplifting vibes he wants! Its as dark or as light as anyone wants it to be! Also would love DJ Abstract back in the game, and Roxy (does anyone know any information about Roxy? Is this he?...
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Roxy ... says this is the one behind Breakbeat Science with El-b?!)
But dub war still stands out a mile to me, the tunes are too sick, im with you, its definately still one of my favourite 12s... the bassline on Generation

far too large

Yep agree with everything you say, Benny Ill is some kind of genius, would love El-B to produce as out there stuff as possible, as that freakish dub he did of Back to Me, was really abstract but still hung together really well. Seems a shame as I don't think the tempa stuff went down big with the garage crew, and those early producers don't seem to be coming out with new stuff (nice to see Benny Ill dj'ing again though). Played quite a bit of it out the other year, it's good summer music
The other thing I like about Generation is that it gets away with using (I think) the Amen break in a...subtle way (and yeah that bass line kills it).
Was trying to find the first Tempa Allstars 12, but that DJ Abstract tune on there's pretty damn lush, if its the one I'm thinking of, all that rolling percussion and detroit flavours, really nice tune.

I only discovered dubstep a little over a year ago, but I find myself more and more drawn to the earlier stuff (mainly thanks to the UV shows on SubFM). I was glad to discover you could still find a few of these releases online. Not this one though ...
The timing of that dubstep history cd on Tempa seems perfect for me, really looking forward to that.

Think UV are doing some good stuff, that's definitely the sound I hark back to, starting to tire of really heavy, eviller than thou half-step. I think a lot of the older stuff was more abstract, soulful and deeper than some of the newer tunes which seems to wind out heavy basslines at the expense of interesting rhythms or emotional content.
Wonder if there'll be loads of old skool dubstep nights in a few years time, seems like garage is being written out of the history, so it's good timing for the Tempa retrospective.
No dis intended for any that like the above, just my taste after all.

i partially agree, but at the same time there is still just so much good dubstep around at the moment, it seems easy to let a minority seem like a majority, but i think some producers are still making stuff as good as any dance music ive ever come across, as abstract, deep and soulful as anything from back when, there is just an increasing proportion i dont enjoy so much
on the old school dubstep nights, im pretty much 100% sure there will be, im sure it'll be looked back upon as a complete golden age
as for garage being written out of history, i dont know about that, around these parts it does seem that way sometimes, but in other quarters i dont think so... its just that it seems that the modern dubstep crowd is almost entirely removed from the garage demographic bizarrely enough, given the manner of its musical development, and furthermore a suprisingly small number seem interested in working backwards to see where it came from. but hopefully the tempa compilation will change that

No that's cool. Think the tunes I've enjoyed most recently in this broad dubstep church have been the soul jazz Digital Mystikz tunes, that Geiom 12' (overnight biscuits?), the Burial album, all of which seem to have a hint of that older sound to them, but on the same level there's also Pinch, Boxcutter and others that seem to hit the right buttons who don't seem to be rooted with the old skool (don't know the history of them so there may be a connection).
Interestingly, whilst I'm not necessarily going with the flow of directions being taken in dubstep at the moment, it has renewed an interest in dub, and I've been looking more into Rhythm and Sound, which seems to me to be one step removed from the old dubstep, with it's minimal techno roots and big dubness, so it's good to cast the net a bit further afield I think and start to haul in some gems and broaden horizons. I've always been quite eclectic in my tastes, so it'd be nice to hear a bigger range of styles appearing, rather than a sort of consensus sound, older dubstep seems to mix with far more other styles than the newer (although I've noticed some good varied mixes appearing in the last few weeks, so seems peeps are feeling the same way).

this was my first dubstep record as well.
i found as a whitelabel and liked the sound.
i didn't know what to call it. i think the term dubstep didn't really happen till later. i never really listened to garage.
this was back when we used to wear an onion on our belts.
