my advice is to uninstall Sony Acid

but if you arent going to head that advice...

create a midi track and assign the output to the VST instrument

make sure your input on the track is the same input and midi channel that your controller is sending info on

"ARM" the track by pushing the button that enables the track to receive data on

if this doesn't help...

you can always push the F1 key, which on ANY windows program is the help feature

The only free sequencer I can think is Buzz Tracker, which is a modular tracker, or one of its clones: Buzzé, Psycle, ...

Otherwise Renoise's probably the cheapest and the one that really works for me.

Then comes Fruity, Live or Reason.

If you aren't comfortable with any of these, it's most likely you'll have a hard time with Cubase or Logic.

Lots of thread about the pros & cons of all of them.

EDIT: sorry, you're asking for a software for mixing only? If so, Live must be the way to go.

Acid's a great program IMHO - especially good for getting down quick & dutty arrangements. But yeah, dunno how much you're gonna get done with just the demo version.

I've had issues with Albino in other platforms as well though. It's a pretty crazy plugin code-wise, can hog resources like a mofo. However, it sounds so good I'm willing to overlook that.

i think Acid is a pretty good program. A lot less complicated then sequencers in the Logic/Cubase class. Very weak with midi, but capable for small midi tasks like bass lines. have you tried Reaper yet? It's not technically free, but you also can use it infinitely without cracking. If you are using it for non-commercial work, it is only $49 and worth far more.

The thing I like about Acid most could probably also be said of Live and a few other programs, but boils down to this: a lot of producers using some super all-in-one program like ProTools or Cubase get lost along the way because the separate steps in making a tune get all muddled together and they start making tunes based around an effects preset or chain, or something like that - but for me personally what works best is:

1) coming up with an idea, whether it's a loop, found sound, melody, beat, whatever - then sketch it out a little bit, come up with some variations, etc.;

2) do my arrangement only [in Acid Pro] and try my hardest not to get sidetracked with any effects beyond using a little reverb or delay in spots as a reference for what I plan on doing in the next steps;

3) once the arrangement is rock solid, I do my pre-mix (still no FX, just basic cleanup & minor EQ);

3) final mixdown, where all the effects and processing and major EQing all happen.

So while I don't do much of #1 and none of #3 or 4 with Acid, for that step #2 - it's perfect for me.

Granted, my reservations about using FX and DSP in general in Acid is a holdover from earlier pre-Sony versions of Acid which had some serious issues with their sound engine... and version 6 has a great sound engine. However, I still think that approaching the process in this order has done nothing but good for my tunes... and I hear tunes all the time where you can totally tell that the guy got completely distracted by an automated filter or a dynamic response effect or something, and that takes over the song. If I wanted to listen to some fool ride the resonance filter for 8 minutes with no other changes or dynamics I'd listen to some bad trance, you know?

used Acid for years. It's shit. Buggy, awkward and desperately aggravating in so many ways. Great for sample collage, and quickly sketching ideas, but given the total lack of support/updates from Sony, its a dangerous choice for a beginner.

But, it is what i know. If i could go back, i'd be using Cubase. Proper sequencer. :)
