Mixing Skillz

Post by bjackman » Mon May 26, 2008 5:16 pm

where have people heard the best mixing - dubstep or other genres

my vote's gotta be Drum n Bass Essentials mixed by DJ Hype in 2004 - i don't even like many of the tunes on there but Hype is just soo gooood at mixing!

also this guy is quite good http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=lGhrPl-imtw [also check the top "related link": a dubstep mix which manages to sneak in Night without sounding like it was mixed by Noddy & Big Ears]

tayo is pretty sick too [check FabricLive32 - completely seamless mixes between dubstep and breaksy stuff]

what do you reckon? anything really impressive you can recommend?

yea those whoa B mixes are really nice. He's fast, on point, in tune, on time. Collie Budz vocal on Tunnel Vision works a treat. Like his dubstep one as well (the beat juggling with Vex'd remix is real nice) though think the grime one is easily better as a whole.

Youngsta is the best dubstep DJ imo. He's not about mixing fast but his selection is too much- not just the fact the tunes he plays are good, moreso the fact that he chooses them so well. When I hear certain songs now, I can only envisage them mixing into certain songs that he's done that fit like a puzzle. Not to say all his transitions are perfect, but most are another level. When he mixed that 'Cops' song with Benny Page 'Swagger' for example- best dubstep mix ive heard recently- the tunes actually have the same riff (listen to em) and he just overlays them to work on next level- unlike a lot of DJs he knows the tunes well. Add the fact that he can beatmatch very well, and his eq play is spot on and you have a 'splendid' DJ. Would like to hear him doing some 3 decking, as I know he's done it before and he's capable of it.

I rate Jeff Mills as well- proper godfather- man can mix with 3 decks and a 909 always on point. Watching that purpose maker video- Sometimes falls out of synch but he's only human. I'm not a big fan of that fast techno but he still kills it and is real fast and swift with his mixes although some of his quick hand movements are just little nothings which make it look all the more impressive. Need to see him live again still. Anyone tell me who the live techno duo are in the second part of the film, as I properly rate their music.

its SO skillful but he doesn't like like hes enjoying himself at all. :o.

I like watching it when DJs do sick mixes AND still brock out better than you.

For dubstep it has to be Youngsta for me, agree with all this here. I honestly here his mixes when i hear certain tunes. Proper safe guy aswell. Other djs in dubstep that enjoy: Chef, he is a mixture of many dj's. He needs to cut out afew tunes which arent good enough imo. Otherwise hes nearly there. Ntype good dj, but i dont like some the stuff he plays, entertainer still. One for the future is Braiden for sure, as the tunes start coming in he will be amongst the best. Him and youngsta 3 deck mash up would be quality.

Thought Ramadanman's set at last FWD was pretty slick, One of the best i've seen in mixing terms.

Rossi B & Luca are one of the best I've heard. They switch it up and perform tricks that no-one else in their genre is doing. Very original in the way they do them as well.
