Where do i get a sturdy desk for mixing?

Post by simian » Tue May 27, 2008 12:29 am

I just moved all my shit down from edinburgh to putney, and now i've got nowhere to put it :(.
I need a new desk, which has to hold a 25" monitor, my decks, and a keyboard mouse. It's also going to have to hold my mackie monitors, till I can afford speaker stands.
Can anyone suggest somewhere in london (or on the internet) to get a decent desk? My main three priorities are Cheap, Strong and Tall (bending down to mix sucks). Drawers might be nice, but I'd rather have something with none at all than loads of crap ones.

Thanks!

you can get a box without a bottom (so like 4 sides) and fill it up 2-3 inches of concrete or silicon cement what ever it is and then put a desk on that.

To raise it up off the floor, and make the whole thing taller?

I swear there is a topic somewhere with some stylish DJ tables and there is this one that has no legs and just bolts onto the wall...

obviously raise it as high as you want and it wont have any wobbly legs.

I have the Vestax DJT-1400 and it is perfect. Very stable and just the right height. However, there are some others to choose from, well worth investing in.

Isn't the 1400 discontinued? My mate was going to buy one, saved up for it and couldn't find anywhere what sells em.

I suggest making your own. Get down B&Q. Dpeending on what you buy, you'll get one the way you want it, for around £50/£60

for the old speaker stands try this:

a square of wood at the bottom

a PVC tube in between

a square of wood at the top

a steel rod down the middle of the PVC tube, put in a hole in the wood at each end [probably should use glue for that one as well]

glue the bottom of the PVC to the bottom piece of wood [u need to make very sure you've got the right glue for this one]

fill the PVC tube with sand

glue the top piece of wood to the top of the PVC tube

you've got a speaker stand - my mate did it and its' pretty effective and the sand in the tube kills the resonance you would expect with the PVC

and obviously make sure they're behind the decks where no drunkards can knock them over [so you might wana measure it up so the top of the stand comes above the top of the desk by a few cm]

That's pretty awesome :)

I need something i can use for production too though :(.
At the moment, i'm considering the following two things:
Pretty awesome desk thing, meant for production, 140 quid:

Ikea table, part of a modular range, exteno-legs, 100 quid:

Neither are particularly cheap, but I can't find anything decent for less :(

Put decks and mixer on floor

Lay on your belly next to them

Start mixing while laying down.
