Sines and light distortion can get a rhodesy effect...

Can't beat a good sample patch for quality rhodes, touch of lp filtering for that extra warmth and just a smidge of reverb for depth.

Mr Ray always seems to do the trick for me - the thing with rhodes though is to treat the vsti's the way they'd treat the real thing. So use some phasing, a little speaker distortion, verb, delay and a leslie cabinet if you can find an emulator. Then you're in minor chord heaven!

I never use them tbh. Anyone got any links to a good example of someone using a Rhodes?

Logic has a pretty good "electric piano" emulator aswell.

native instruments classic keys collection awesome.
Has some other keys that aren't as hammered as the rodes.
Not that I don't love the rodes as well.
I like the original 60s and 70s recordings as well.

Rodes has been used in loads of music.
From early acid jazz and groove, psychedelic jazz, funk, reggae, rock, dnb, funky house, house, nu jazz, intelligent dnb, trip hop, hip hop, progressive rock etc.

You name it, its been their some where.
Not to deflect from the fact that it is an awesome sounding instrument.

The new real rodes electric piano's look orgasmic.

The new ones also have midi and look much more funky.

Not to spam this thread but here's a tune of mine with a nice rhodes sample:

http://soundcloud.com/rendr/memories-5

I got the rhodes samples, duplicated the layer. The first layer I low passed at 400Hz & added overdrive to give it warmth with touch of reverb. The second layer I high passed at 200Hz added an exciter, and bitcrusher on a subtle setting; sent to a bus channel where the two tracks were compressed together and a touch of reverb added over the top.

imo, piano samples can gain just as much as basslines when it come to splitting up bands and processing individually.

The best sounding rhodes will come from a real rhodes. Since that really isn't an option, sampling one is probably your best option.

I've demoed quite a few rhodes vst/au's and my personal favorite is: Lounge Lizard. It has the most realistic sound and controls. WAY better than the EVP88 in Logic. But, it is still missing something. There's nothing out there that is going to give you a good emulation of the original. Lounge Lizard is the closet IMO.

Just go digging for some samples, that's what I do when I'm on the hunt for a rhodes. The Doors have some good samples. Grab one off of one of their more obscure tracks.

Good tip man. I'll have to try that out.

I think FL Keys(shiped with fruity) has a rhodes preset, maybe fucking about with that could give you some nice sounds

logic evp88 is great! kinda dull by itself but an awesome starting place.

nice rhodes emulations live in the microkorg and the roland jv and xv series.

for sampled rhodes, 'lean forward' or anything by LTJ bukem. for real rhodes, lonnie liston smith.

oh and just as a heads up any akai disc will show as blank on reg cd drive
translator programs or vsts that read them are only way besides an actual akai
also i think i have a couple other discs that aren't quite as good but will dig for
