No offense.. But the sound at the Enormous Room is kinda lame-ski.
Otherwise a nice place.

I agree. But it's one of the first venues in Boston to have Dubstep.

Plus G Notorious has been playing uk sounds for over a decade.
And, I know one of the bartenders so I get free drinks.
So, I can over look the crap sound in the place.
It's also a lounge type place and when I play it's more of the deeper side of things.

I gotta agree, No idea why the owner won't break down and bring in additional sound to augment the brightness of the space. I've heard that room sound absoulutely killer. Plastician and Vex'd played the Enormous room at BEAT RESEARCH a few years back and sound reinforcement was brought in and it sounded rich warm and HEAVY on the low end. so it's not that the room is uncontrollable it simply needs a sound system and some acoustic work. The space itself is nice. (the bar window is kind of a drag) but overall the room itself has a vibe and ambiance.
a Lounge NEEDS more low end for LOW volume level listening. lower frequencies need more energy to be audible. The sound person simple got it wrong. even a few subs and some strategically placed acoustic panels will make that room sound worlds better than it does now and will make it even easier to create a more lounge atmosphere because the room will have more warmth and people wouldn't have to speak as loudly to overcome the Brightness that the space has now. and on nights where DANCING is the focus, the sound system would be better suited to the challenge of what the DJs are playing there.
It would even make sense if the people hosting event's there ponied up some coin to bring in a couple of subs. sure it's not their venue but if you are hosting your event there, sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. splitting the cost and getting the owners to kick in as well if you can draw additional people in with better sound and an overall better enviroment, More nights would be successful from a profit position for the owner. Show them the effects (better turn out, more bar sales) to get them to see why better sound is a good investment.
ENORMOUS ROOM CAMBRIDGE:
Atmosphere gets an 8
Location - 9
Drinks - 7 ( they make a decent mojito)
Sound - 3
that's my take on it. ( sorry, I just got on a flow and didn't realize I had written and entire article on the subject)
I'm going to see if I can get some sound reinforcement in for June 1. and I'd like to play outside of that wall as well. I'll contact G and see if we can sort something out.

yep it sure was, and...
Joe Nice Played Operation Underground several months Earlier in 05 which is still quite funny to me now since everyone seems to have caught the bug in 08. Talk about a delayed reaction eh?
Dubstep in Boston goes back even further. The soulchampion crew [ G , Me , Elyte, Senyo] had been mixing in SUB-LOW and what eventually became dubstep years before that during RUNNIN. Goldspot productions aka Dinesh [Tempa recordings UK] played there.
The history of Dubstep in the clubs is pretty rich here in Boston. DJ C and DJ Flack were clearly doing something with it, as well as Dr. Nigel aka diabolik, and even nikulydin (sp?) was playing LIVE Dubstep and their sets. dating back to 2004-2005. BOSTON is just such a transient city that its tough to break people out of their shell and get them to explore something different. they're in and out of the city so fast it's hard to get a large core group of regular attendees.
Looks like we have a little more traction than we did a few years back though. I certainly put in my share of leg work helping to get BASSIC some lift, prior to relocating Operation Underground to Good Life and still support the Soundbox crew and events, while I'm out actively recruiting new people to come out and hear something different.
but yeah the Plastician Vex'd party was a very good time, and DUBWISE on JUNE 1 will be a good time as well.

i had just encountered dubstep for the first time by following rephlex records, i had the 2 grime lps and a few releases on planet mu when, by virtue of being a regular at beat research, i caught plasticman and vex'd. after that night i pretty much stopped playing ragga jungle and got deep into dubstep.
jamal - that night jake brought in an 18" powered mackie subwoofer. talk to tony flackett he might have gotten it from massart for the night. it would be sweet if you had one for every dubwise, we could link up my pa and throw parties anywhere. hit me up sometime.
and btw, brittany makes a mean long island ice tea. its the strongest one ive ever had.

Straight up... It's good to know people have similar feelings about the sound.
I kinda miss going to Boston and hitting up garage events.. State has my license and I was the only one with a car out of all my friends. Which sucks for me because I was starting to push my anxiety aside and talking to people, I need to start networking with like minded people around here... I'd love to start writing beats with people who don't wanna write club-banger hip-hop all the time.

For the record:
a) I caught the bug beginning of '06 a year before I moved to Boston.... and as soon as i heard it I loved it (the delay was in milliseconds)

, and
b) I don't think it's important who started what when, or who's responsible. When all's said and done, the only thing anyone will remember will be the only thing that mattered when it was first recognized, and that's the sound, which moves you no matter what you name it. History lessons are for things that have come to pass, let's keep it living breathing... instead of laying claim, let it lay claim over you. Good music has always been around, no one started it, and it doesn't belong to anybody and nobody can take it from you.

I agree, I was thinking about how this post was starting to become a pissing contest. We all came to this sound from different places. That is one of the things about Dubstep I love. It is the diversity of influence on the sound that makes it so good. We all like different aspects of it and our record collections most likely would show that.
And, Thanks for sorting out some sound re-enforcement. I'll talk to Geoff about it. I would love to maybe work something out so we can do it monthly. Maybe?!

Sorry to be the last one to chime in on my own night but...
So yes, TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT. Here are a few highlights...
1. Happy Birthday Alex Incyde!
2. Yes, we should actually have REINFORCED SOUND! Thanks Skunk for the loan. Management seems ok with it as long as we can get it all hooked up.
3. The night will be broken up into 4 sets, alternating between G Notorious & Jam-2 and Pandai'a & Incyde.
4. G and Jam will be playing one set of our usual everything under the UKG umbrella and one set of early/proto/"old skool" Dubstep/Darkside 2-Step (think Horsepower/early Tempa, El-B, Zed Bias, etc.)

D'oh! Due to an emergency, I have just been informed that Enormous Room will be closed tonight. We will have to reschedule. Apologies to all but especially the birthday boy.
