I'm trying to expand my world music collection, so any recommendations would be appreciated. Considering that the genre 'world music' is a very broad term, I'm open to any style from any region that may be classified under this.
So far my favorites are:
Thomas Mapfumo
Ali Farka Toure
Buena Vista Social Club
King Sunny Ade

Good choice! 2 more Zimbabwean groups/artists you should check out:
Bhundu Boys - Shabini is one of my favourite LPs ever, so lively.
Oliver Mtkudzi - Met him in Zimbabwe a good few years ago. Really nice guy.

World music is basicly, non Western music. However that doesn't really mean anything today as most cultures are pretty Westernised. If you are interested in World music you should go to WOMAD festival it is sick(World Of Music And Dance). 'World' artists on their lineups in the past have included Asian Dub Foundation, Mr Scruff, DJ Clipz (not very 'World') and loads of random shit which just makes you go WTF. Saying that last year they had some Nigerian hiphop which was good. This year Lee scratch Perry and they are doing Bristol beats vs Brazil Beats so Marky, Roni Size TC. Definitly the best festival atmosphere anywhere in the UK anyway.
