you write a bit about your profession, your education etc..
then you can "link" to colleagues and industry buddies. When you link, your network grows.
It's quite helpfull for finding new jobs, and if your in sales or business development, very valuable for leads.

I sell primary to the pharmaceutical industry in the US. I only have around 5 connections but my searchable "network" is well over 40k.

It's a great place for leads among other things!
