Easy All,

I'd liek to know if any of you guys have ever used such a thing? I swear I've read about it, seen freeware vst's but I wondered

A) If it works

B) If anyone could suggest something they know works?

Bless up

in what way? as in turning audio notes, say a piece of piano playing, into the same notes as a midi file?

never heard of anything to do this, can't quite see how it would be possible. perhaps with a very clean audio sample, only one instrument, guess it might then be able to anaylise the frequencys to derive the note and then convert them to midi. Still havn't ever heard of a programe that can do that.

yes they exist, but I don't have any link nor suggestion.

Maybe you're better of when you learn some music theory, or buy guitar tuner.

A 'new' thing is Melodyne. But still, you need a 'clean' sample...

If you mean converting to midi files that retain the pitch and velocities etc then I think the only thing is Melodyne.

But it's fairly easy to extract the feel of an audio file in terms of note placement and arrangement using, say, Recycle and a sampler isn't it?

if you are on the cubase / nuendo platform you can export a project as midifiles

I believe it translates wavs into midi notes

good question $hy

I'll try this in about 9 hours and report back

no, cubase/nuendo dont "convert" wav to midi.
afaik there is no tool that delivers results, that are worth to work with.
tools like widi (http://www.widisoft.com/) may work with some single and clean played instruments. as already mentioned melodyne also got a wav2midi algorithm....
but dont even think about converting a whole song or some instruments playing together into separated midi-notes. :)

I do know that once I tried to export one midi track and I ended up with a whole arrangement of a song all in MIDI notes

Eastern Electrics: are you by chance related to Western Synthetics?

Logic has "Audio to Score". But the source material has to be clean and monophonic. I have never really had much success with it though.

I have heard people say Melodyne is pretty good for doing this.

There is also a Plug-in called "Widi - Audio To MIDI VST" : http://www.widisoft.com/english/widi-au ... i-vst.html

Never tried it though... so I can't comment on how good it is....

I´m gonna try that on Cubase (SX3), maybe there is a surprise for me.

.., never heard about the "Western Guys" before...maybe i should say hello to them! :D

well just tried the whole audio to midi thing in Cubase (yes I know I am a bit late, but only by about 6 hrs), didn't seem to work for me. It allowed be to export it as a midi file, but when I opened this file it was blank.

Would be interested in how you do if anyone does figure it out, my give an interesting avenue to explore (no homo)

Melodyne works pretty well for me.

logic has 2 functions [audio to midi template, and audio to score]

you can extract a midi rhythm out of an audio file [down to quite fine velocities] and there's also the possibility of getting it's pitch, but that's usually shit.

Related, but in no way helpful, there are some free vst synths which respond to audio signals (they are aimed at guitarists but anything works)here:

http://frettedsynth.home.att.net/

Shit, they've been taken down, oh well, they are good fun anyway.

if you only want midi notes for timing and not pitch/key etc. you could set up some sort of gate that once it hits that certain frequency it send out a message that can be used to trigger a midi instrument. dont know how but i know you can.

Sonar 7 Producer has a tool (V-vocal) that does pitch to midi conversion. Like most tools of it's type the signal has to be clean and monophonic. It's not half bad if you want to hum a tune and turn it into midi notes.

MultitrackStudio Pro Plus has a pitch to MIDI converter built into it. http://MultitrackStudio.com That's the program I use as my DAW, by the way.

I remember there are other programs that do it too. Although, many of them were written for Windows 98.

I LOVE YOU GUYS! This part of the forum is still like the old days, people actually help lol!

Right I'll explain a lil more.

As I'm sure you all might know form my music I like vocals, ALOT! And I have a G-tuner fx pluggin which sits on an audio channel and will tell me what notes the singer is singing at. With that info I can then get my bass and so on to follow what the singer is doing.

What I wanted to knwo is if you can get something that will import the file (accapella or anything clean and solo'd) and it could spit out a midi fill with just basic info. Really all I need is notes, Veloc n all the rest I could work out manually.

Thanks for the comments guys, deffo an interesting one.

Melodyne is what i need, I've watched vid's about it and I'm saving 4 it right now just as I'm learning more and more about whats it can do I thought well surely there is already osomething out there that will at least give me basic info.

I have to say I cant waitto use Melodyne, getting all your beats, vocal and anything else all playing the same melody is pretty cool in my eyes!

I'll update this when I have some more info but thanks again for all your comments.

Bless up

I wouldn't trust that stuff. Sometimes those programs can talk your ears into believing it's on. With all this wonderful technology your ears are still the best plug in. You have to start by finding the root notes then you can usually pick out some of the chords. Once you find the key you fill in the other notes of the progression rather easily. 99% of music is based on very simple 2 to 4 chord progressions. Of course it's taken me about 19 years to train my ears to this point but some learn a lot quicker

I looked into the Melodyne a little bit. I came to the conclusion that the plug in is best used in a recording session where you can work with single instruments pre fx. The prog looks amazing from watching the videos. Maybe not so amazing once you realize it's limitations.
