i'm currently a london-based girl into all forms of electronic music, and yes, including dubstep !

i'll be moving to toronto in a couple of months time for a year as i have a work permit for that long. i'm looking to get ideas as to decent areas to live in, that are close to get to the city (for work, although i haven't got a job yet!). looking into the whole dubstep, techno (minimal) and general electronic scene too ?

also, if anyone is aware of any places to look into for media sales work ? i know, might be a long shot !

also, if there are any girls on here in the toronto area into their music ? would be good to hook up ! i'll be bringing my powerbook, keyboards and music software with me !

I live in Toronto and throw the subtrac dubstep events here.

Places to live:
I just moved into the Junction, it's in the west end of the city but down town is quite accessible from there.
Rent is cheep and the majority of the residents in the area are artists so it has a cool atmosphere to it.
Another area you might want to look into is Parkdale, also in the west end it was populated with crack heads and insane people for about 20 years.
However, over the last few years it's cleaned up a bit and is now known as a fairly cheep "hip" place to live (just don’t look on Jamison Ave).
Pretty much anywhere downtown is VERY expensive to live, best to look out of the downtown core.
The east end is quite residential and cheep but not as close to the action as the west.
As appealing as it may be I'd also recommend to not looking in an area called the Annex.
The apartments are nice and there are plenty of young people there due to UofT being close by but unless you’re living in university residence the prices for rent are outrageous.

Music wise there's lots to chose from, subtrac events happen about once a month, techno wise bmr and a club called footwork do a lot of dope minimal stuff.
A good first stop would be www.tribemagazine.com to learn about upcoming events.
Work wise, media sales in Toronto is a heavily saturated market so I wish you luck in finding work.
However the sales force here in general is starving for sales people and it's quite easy to get a job in corporate world as most major conglomerates have satellite offices here.

Definitely look at workoplis.ca, monster.com and craigs list for job postings in sales.
Almost every time I'm on there some biotech or software company is looking for reps.

I'm playing there in August I think.

My girl friend and I travel back and forth between Toronto and London all the time. We've lived in both cities for lengthy periods of time. They are my fav cities in the world.

You'll notice a very different DnB scene in Toronto, that is a must mention. The 'electronica' scene isnt really the same in Toronto, its not really accepted as much as London. Toronto is more particular about their music, at a drum and bass party you will only get people that are really into and love drum and bass while in London it just seem to be everyone and anyone, you don’t have to be into drum and bass to go party ona Friday night at Fabric.

Dubstep does exist in Toronto. Big up Sek and Tim Titan.

I don’t really know what to say, it’s a big and very interesting topic.. lots of differences between the two cities, I could write a book.

No doubt tho, they are the best cities in the world.

If you wanna know anything in specific, ask away. Also, id like to hear what you have to say about the differences once you experience actually living in both cities. Some people visit a city for a week or two and think they know what its all about.

why go to toronto from london to work??

your going to get owned in currency conversion when you go back to london... i started going to london for the GBP to bring back to Canada. Its way more worth it to work for GBP.

i'm moving there with my other half. it's easier for us both as one of us is in london and the other in the states at the moment. i also have family who have recently moved there.

im a freelance audio engineer, mostly for tv i.e. sound recordist work and i know that the independant filmmaking scene is on a much larger scale in north america as a whole.

so who knows, i have the work permit and visa stuff sorted for a year so worth a the adventure i guess

i'm hoping to move before december (at the latest) as that is when i have to leave by for my visa/work permit to take effect.
