actually, i was thinking about doing screwed+chopped (houston-style) remixes of jungle tracks... pitched right down and heavy effects. How awesome would 'Super Sharp Shooter' or something sound dubbed-out and slooooowwwwwww....?

... I been experimenting with this too, some interesting results from dark d&b like late bloodyfist & renegade hardware type stuff. I got a 10 minute megamix on my other computer I'll get it up tomorrow if anyones keen, starts of with The Bug and ends with 8 bars from Refuge Krus Terminator & includes a "refix" of 7 Ways to Make You Jack by m. jefferson

yeah, in a way, the breakstep stuff produced by guys like Toasty or Dubchild is a kind os slowed down oldskool jungle music.
Probably a big influence for them.

I just got a repress of terminator yesterday

It was thrown into the used record section (conveniently located next to all the dubstep) Once I get the wax I ordered from da uk I'll see what up with my first dubstep mix. Right now I feel like I'm learning to spin from the beginning again...

also, in simon renolds' fine article on grime in the wire (april o5), he says
"But in grime's textured beats and complex programming you can also hear the imprint of the jungle that most of these late teens/early twenties producers grew up on, alongside folk memory traces of gabba and techno."
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!folk memory trraces, indeed"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that last line strikes me as more poignant than perhaps it should, and it's what comes to mind when i hear "ancient memories".

of course it is and isn't!
i think the term "folk memory" may be more reasonable...
like these kids who are making dubstep are gonna remember raving in the days of techno.
that dinna sound right either...
i like the idea of the producers of today being informed by a folk history
and that techno is now part of hour folk history...
yah get meh?

Sometimes you gotta step back to go forward innit!!
And as for 'ancient memories' / folk memory ... we're always developing the work of our forefathers. Looking back does not necessarily mean going backwards.
I am heavily influenced by a lot of old music - older D&B, jungle, techno, hardcore, acid house, dub, reggae, jazz, funk .....
