hi peeps jus got a new laptop i use cue base on my pc but want sonethink different to try on the move is fruity loops a good bet ?

Not what you use its how you use it but Fruity is pretty easy to just switch on and have a beat running up in 2 minutes flat, personally I'd go for what I'd know unless you have past FL knowledge.

Don't matter how 'simple' a software is, even experts have to learn how to use it.

Well if cubase if what you're used to and your laptop can run it, use that innit then you won't spend 'nuff time trying to figure how to do this an that.

if your used to cubase and need soemthing easy and light on cpu i suggest reason. only because reason is a more traditional sequencer and works basically the same way cubase does. where as FL is pattern sequencing. both are good programs both are relitivly easy but imo reason will probably seem more natural in sequencing.

fl studio is awesome for sample based composition (like building stuff from 1-hit drum samples) and is an excellent host for VST's.

also the best drum programming of any software i've tried. very good for writing intricate beats and percussion.

however, I don't think its so great for composition, once you have a lot of automation and many channels, everything turns to shit (although I haven't tried the new version 8, maybe its improved)

I started on Cubase VST back in 03. Quickly progressed to FL4 after i saw a mate using it to write complete tracks. Im still on FL after 5 years - its just so damn quick and easy! But - i feel like a logic/mac upgrade coming on in the future...

fl = hard to get big sound in compared to reason, has vsts
reason = not vst compatible , hard to get samples into
cubase = good for both once you get your head round it

my answer would be rewire reason into cubase if you can afford it

could you use both FL & Reason ?

say Reason for basslines and FL for melody and drum patterns.

I do find im adding a bass boost to FL to get that overall full sound.

Yes, you can use Fruity as a rewire host

Or you could simply bounce down audio from one app and use it in the other.

You can't really compare FL and Reason in terms of sound since Reason is a bunch of synths and effects with a sequencer and FL is a VST host. It's like asking whether Pirelli tyres go faster than a Porsche. If you like the synths and effects it's good, if you prefer what you can do with VSTs, it's not.

Every comparison I've seen has said that all hosts 'sound' the same if you're using the same VSTs and samples and doing the same stuff (as in the outputs cancel out bit for bit if you're careful to exclude random factors like freerunning oscillators and the like) so on FL vs Cubase, unless the built in plugs are a big draw for you it's basically a question of which method of working suits you best.

I started off on FL, then switched to Cubase about a 2 years ago. My workflow just collapsed, couldn't get my head round it at all. About 3 months ago, I switched back to FL and couldn't be happier.

It's a case of just having a go with both and finding out which suits your style of working.
