offbeat hip hop + dubstep
offbeat hip hop + dubstep
okay, i'm not sure if it has already been discussed, but damn i'm still surpised & happy that the offbeat hip hop (just to put a name on it even if it's not a genre) & dubstep scenes are gettin closer every day, seriously i've never been so happy with music since i discovered the golden era hip hop in the early 90's! check the samyiam ep on hyperdub, of course the mix with flying lotus & kode 9 & there's also gaslamp killer playing dmz in his mix! any of u got other names, tracks or mixes to suggest? any opinion about this?
Yeah they're good. Think the first ones came out in 2004 or somethinglinear wrote:was listening to the ratatat hip hop remixes the other day and i reckon some of these are on quite a wonky flex, seem to pre-date the post-dilla flying lotus stuff as well. check the remix of Biggie "dead wrong" and "party and bullshit"...adds something fresh to the originals anyway.

I saw them live the other night they were off the hook, it was proper mad party music. Those remixes are wicked.linear wrote:was listening to the ratatat hip hop remixes the other day and i reckon some of these are on quite a wonky flex, seem to pre-date the post-dilla flying lotus stuff as well. check the remix of Biggie "dead wrong" and "party and bullshit"...adds something fresh to the originals anyway.

yes!! between that, and the grime voice overs on dubstep tracks.. Im digging both the stuff from us and uk mc's getting reworking of tracks for dubstep. It brings the us and uk scene's a bit closer imo!linear wrote:was listening to the ratatat hip hop remixes the other day and i reckon some of these are on quite a wonky flex, seem to pre-date the post-dilla flying lotus stuff as well. check the remix of Biggie "dead wrong" and "party and bullshit"...adds something fresh to the originals anyway.

That sounds brilliant, I just saw them in a little half empty place in York hehe...linear wrote:yea i saw them a year ago in barca at some massive superclub to about 1000 crazy spaniards, was awsome. i had never even heard of them but they rocked it.I saw them live the other night they were off the hook, it was proper mad party music. interesting to read this! been thinking about this a lot recently.
went to FWD last night.. Alex Nut from Rinse was doing the warm up.. was really mad to see dubstep heads checking out some of the weirdo hip hop..
I've been following the beats scene for the last few years. Not surprisingly the main artists people have heard of are Flying Lotus and his LA cohorts - Samiyam, Gaslamp. obviously with the amount of promo / coverage for FlyLo / brainfeeder they are getting lots of attention. In actual fact, dark wonky electronic beats like that exist all round the world - the "scene" has been going for years.
Here's a list of all the artists - i'll update it with myspaces, as many names as i can think of.
radio shows:
Alex Nut - Rinse FM - 1 to 3 pm, saturdays
Andrew Meza - www.btsradio.net - the station is down at the moment, trust me his mixes will kill you.
Jay Scarlett - Amp Soul Generations on Samurai.fm
scotland / ireland:
Hudson Mohawke
Mike Slott (together = Heralds Of Change)
Rustie
Lucky Me crew (includes those mentioned, plus Surface Empire, The Blessings, many more - lots of great mixes if you like mohawke & rustie) - http://www.thisisluckyme.com/
All City Records dublin (check the 7 x 7 beatstrumentals series)
Amsterdam / netherlands
labels:
Eat Concrete
Kindred Spirits (put out 12"s like Nod Navigators, etc)
Cinnaman (beat dimensions)
Tom Trago
Mamiko Motto aka 1.1 (check for her radio shows on Samurai.fm)
London / England
Lukid
2Tall
Morgan Zarate
Steve Spacek
Jackhigh
Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313)
Danny Breaks
Bullion
Paul White
Soundspecies
Burntprogress // CDR crew (monthly party held at plastic people allows producers of all styles to exhibit their beats. lots of this style to be found here)
Analog Jones
Tightface
Japan:
Circulations (label)
Jazzysport (label) - roster includes Grooveman Spot, Budamunky, Dj Mitsu The Beats. If you check for their 12"s you'll hear lots of mad shit
Turkey:
Onur Engin
Ahu aka Dolly
Bulgaria:
1000 names (their stuff was messing up heads last night!!!)
i'll add more and with links later.

[quote="Jubscarz"]Morgan Zarate's new tunes are sick, and bullion killed it with that EP, I forget the name. /quote]
nice one jubs.. morgan's playing gramaphone on wednesday with benji b, that should be a nice one. "M.A.B" on Fat City records is still the shit.
Bullion "Get Familiar" sounded ridiculous at FWD last night. seems like quite a few dubstep heads are feeling that one.
