dubstep virus affecting other genres?
dubstep virus affecting other genres?
hi,
just signed up here, but have been listening to dubstep for a few years now.
it is funny to hear dubstep production values making their way into other electronic music genres.
anyone got any examples? i can think of a few. it would be cool to build a list...

Dubstep breakdowns in Nu-School Breaks tracks are the most I've heard. D&B had the whole half-step thing happening before Amit made the style his own, Future Prophecies did a few of them on Certificate 18 & early Subtitles releases in 2001.

would you call this track, dubstep or dark ambient with dubstep influences?

"Dark Energy"
a few of the other tracks have obvious dubstep elements like the bass treatments, but the album isn't true dubstep.

All good music influences music from other genres, its the best way to push fresh sounds forward.

People have been making tunes akin to this for years. Bill Laswell being a perfect example.dubremix wrote:would you call this track, dubstep or dark ambient with dubstep influences?

I've got a lot of the Laswell dub tracks, but they are more Reggae and traditional sounding dub. They always feature him playing a real electric bass. That sound is great, but electric bass doesn't make me think dubstep. Not that wobble bass is required, but dubstep basses in general are heavily designed and processed in the coolest ways... Bill Laswell is a bass player, so that always comes through.

well there's been a slew of minimal steppy dnb tunes with big deep subs over the last few years that perhaps show that some heads have being finding inspiration with teh space and the dynamic range of some of the best dubstep - although it's hardly a new sound for dnb; at best it's a bit of welcome return towards a healthy sonic template, but given that dnb was doing that a decade ago it would seem silly to say it's dubstep infecting dnb
techno people (where i'm from anyway) seeem to be turning to dubstep in droves though and getting quite excited about it - which is quite odd since garage never really got any sort of a foothold in ireland at all; i remember telling some dublin techno lads a few years ago about what i think i described as a fresh offshoot of uk garage that was getting really interesting and they laughed at me - now they're listening to appleblim on their car stereos and quizzing me about 2562 and headhunter (and given the fact that i'm prettty much a complete dubstep noob with a nice line in musical bluffery i'm pretty sure i'm hardly the right guy to ask lol)
on a completely unrelated note, and i'm sure it was reported here already, but i was recently doing a video interview with marky and he said he was on brazilian mtv being interviewed with pete tong at some festival in sao paolo and they were asked what the future of dance music was - pete tong apparently just said "dubstep".

you're damn lucky you didn't hear them play dnb to be fair...
