Will dubstep prices keep going up & up?

My friend Steve is thinking of selling his early DMZs to finance an alarmingly prolific addiction to blocks of hash and nightly deliveries of kung po chicken and mushroom fried rice. He asked me if he'd be pissed off to see them going for three times the price he'll get for them now in a year's time. I answered that he had every right to be pissed off right now as he is a supremely ugly human being and is getting fatter by the week to the extent that he can't dance without sweating so much that people bolt for the fire exits fearing a flash flood. We had a long stoned discussion about past precedents of niche genres and price fluctuations. It all got a bit Gordon Gekko. We smoked so much that everything turned totally Lazenby and when I woke up someone had filled my ears with cold mushrooms. Bastards.
Anyway. What do you reckon about his DMZs? Is the price of dubstep rarities just gonna keep going up year by year, or will they crash once people forget what dubstep is and start grooving to Bolivian pigeon-step instead?

I think the rarer they get, the more expensive they will get. Just check the price of this very rare ragga jungle record:

as long as there's no repress of the early DMZ stuff, they'll keep going up in value i'd have thought.
even if someone had the foresight to keep mint, sealed copies of DMZ06, DMZ07, DMZ08, DMZ09, DMZ10, DMZ11, DMZ12 and DMZ13, then they would fetch a few hundred quid in two or three years if there's no repress.
same with deep medi. if you had the whole lot in mint condition then they would be worth a pretty penny once all the copies have been sold.
i wouldn't have thought all dubstep would be going up in value though. deep medi, dmz, hyperdub and punch drunk are the only
consistently brilliant labels i can think of.
i don't reckon holding on to 100 copies of 2NAQ for example would make you more than £3 profit on each record if you're lucky. most of the time, the second hand price is directly proportionate to the quality (or rarity) of the music on the record, and how many copies were pressed. DMZ and hyperdub etc only release top notch beats, which is why people are willing to shell out £50 for one 12"
i'm holding on to a few sealed copies of some big dubstep tunes, but i think i might have picked the wrong ones to stash

they've already been repressed once, so i doubt i'll get more than £10 per 12" in a year or so, but that's half the fun of buying them in the first place if you ask me.

I'm gonna stick my poncey 'gold leaf cover' copy of that 12" Thom Yorke did with the Burial remix on ebay smack bang in the middle of the crescendo of Mercury Music Prize hoo-hah 'cos both Burial and Radiohead are up for the gong. Mind you, anyone who buys it off me is an absolute mug 'cos all the tunes are feckin' rubbish. And if I don't make a profit I'm gonna find out where Thom Yorke lives and do things to his pet guinea pigs which would make Richard Gere blush.

to be honest they pretty much top out after a while. particularly if interest in the scene begins to wain or people start rocking out bootlegs.
i've got a mint copy of "trust me" by roni size which used to run at about 90 quid on ebay... until a few cheeky whites drop with it on. now it's worth about 30 or so
you can never guarantee anything really.
tell your mate to get a job anyway, you can't spend early dmzs on hash, it's sacrelige. plus he'll regret it hugely in a few years

What a story lol!
I think they will but isnt it more down to how much the person wants it! People pay silly money for silly things!
One mans shit is another mans gold!
Things like DMZ series I think will be worth a mint later in life, one of those true scene inspired music.
BTW! Your friend is a fool for parting with his records for food n hash! (At least get green lol)

It's okay, there's the kung po chicken too. Anyway, he's unemployable, except as perhaps some kind of speed bump.
I remember this happening with the "Hangable Autobulb" EPs by AFX. I sold mine for over £100 each a few years ago... these days they fetch between 20 and 30. A copy of WAR001 sold on ebay for £17.50 the other day. Is the credit crunch hitting dubstep??

I WISH EVERY ONE WOULD MAKE MORE RAGGA DUBSTEP

Opinions differ. In my humble oblivion WAR005 should've made its worldwide debut on CBeebies, then gone straight into the bin and stayed there, or perhaps been crushed and used to lay a road through Hackney for London 2012. Agree with you about the ragga dubstep though. Ragga jungle was always just fecking wonderful. Especially that "Under Mi Sensi" remix and "Jungle Tempo" by Redrose and "Worries In The Dance" by New Blood and "My Sound Jungle" by Frankie P.

i have double copies of congo natty CONGO 001 12" that i bought in 1995 for $6.99 each. if i put those 12"s on ebay today, i'd make about $300/$150 each. i'd never sell them.
how much is music worth to you? how much is history worth to you? the reason why collecting music is amazing, like collecting books is that you retain a legacy. it's something real, that you can hold in your hands, give to your kids, and they can give it to their kids.
not sure about people doing the white label dance strictly for £'s. especially when you come on here and rub it in peoples faces.

That's one opinion, and it's a very valid one. I recently had a clear-out of things I had kept for years and years and years, all of it culturally important. Rare books & films & music mainly. I freecycled most of it, and sold a few items on ebay. Basically I made sure it got to the people who wanted it. But no-one's the Gatekeeper of Culture or the Defender of Dubstep. It's sites like this one and Discogs which are keeping this information alive. It's cyberspace, not dusty attics and bedrooms.
I was watching a documentary film the other day called "The Mindscape of Alan Moore". There's one bit where he says:
"As I understand the theory of Period Information Doubling, this states that if we take one period of human information as being the time between the invention of the first hand-axe - say around 50,000 BC - and 1 AD, then this is one period of human information and we can measure it by how many human inventions we came up with during that time. Then, we see how long it takes for us to have twice as many inventions. This means that human information has doubled. As it turns out, after the first 50,000 year period, the second period is about 1,500 years, say around the time of the Rennaissance. By then, we had twice as much information. To double again, human information took a couple of hundred years. The period speeds up... between 1960 and 1970 human information doubled again. As I understand it, human information is now doubling around every 18 months. Further to this, there is a point some time around 2015, where human information will be doubling once every thousandth of a second. This means that in each thousandth of a second we will have accumulated more information than we have in the entire previous history of the world. At this point I believe that all bets are off."
I can see us approaching this in the exponential increase in the rate of dubstep releases...

dubstep is hot at the moment and a lot of the classics are hard to get
there are a lot of newcomers who can't get hold of some of the older tunes who really want them, chiefly because some of them are amazing
i sold haunted/anti war dub for 30 quid within 4 minutes of posting it up yesterday.
as for war001, i offered it up for sale on the forum last night and within minutes the offers started rolling in, with some willing to pay 30 quid immediately.
i have now had to put it on ebay because it was getting too complicated to track what people were offering
of course, maybe if someone puts up a copy of war001 that has been played a lot and isnt in great condition it wont fetch a high price because, naturally if you're going to splash out you want the tune to be in good nick..
IMO dubstep will stop commanding high prices when the demand goes away, this isnt going to happen for a little while yet

^Yeah, but bear in mind that's just a Discogs price. You can specify any price you want if you have a copy to sell. Doesn't mean it's the recognised value of the record. The true value means what people are willing to pay. Wait til that record comes on ebay and we'll see what the real value is.

What makes me laugh is that there are a few stupid people with ££££££ who will go "wow look, £11,000 must be special"
maybe won't work in this example, but the concept is real.
