Losing my dubstep production virginity

Post by .klimaxx » Fri Aug 22, 2008 11:31 am

Okay, i've been writing on this forum for a while - but up til now i've never actually produced a dubstep track, as i've been concentrating on more electro/techno stuff..

Finished this track today - let me know what you all think of it!

Be as cruel as you like.. I want harsh criticism :)

thanks

I am listening on some crappy headphones at work but it sounds good for som1 who is new to it.

What VST you using for the bass? sounds a bit like massive but also parts sound like Albino.

I use Reason so would be very surprised if you made it in Reason :D
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

not bad mate, technically it seems quite sound. My only real criticsm is that the drums never change up so the groove of that track is the same throughout, which for me is the biggest cause of listener boredom (not trying to be harsh i literally cant think of another way to describe it). try building up your drum layers a bit more so there is more swing to the general track to give it more energy.
otherwise i think its pretty good 8)

and serox it doesnt matter what synth he's using, i can quite easily get that kind of sound out of reason with some fiddling. try some Fm between sawtooths at different pulse widths in thor. People need to get over the idea that you can only get this kind of sound in certain synths! as long as you have the right knowledge you can make pretty much any noise in any synth!

Great atmosphere mate, I love it!!
The bassline dropping at ~0:50 seems to come with a bit of unintented distortion. Perhaps some clashing frequencies?
Neat production however.

I'd love a 320 :D

I didnt mean it in a bad way I was just being nosy. I am curious as to what people use to make what sound when I hear it :D

cheers guys. well i use massive and fm8 for everything - arranged in FL 8.

i will definitely try changing the drums and that - it's what i'm least experienced at due to the fact that i only play piano and not drums.

@Daft tnuc: i'll upload a 320kbps version to sendspace tonight, and thanks for the heads up on the frequency clash.

cheers, .klimaxx

good work, especially for a first try! the vocal sample works really well. have you got a link for your techno stuff?

only thing id say is the delay on the snare that comes in occasionally sounds a bit basic, maybe add a filter and perhaps another effect onto the delayed part. only a tiny issue though, its a good tune.

since its an EXTREMELY good first production i would like to add my two cents =)

- the stereo-field of the main 'piano' loop is too wide, centering a bit more will prevent the 'empty' sound happening when it drops out... it will create more cohesion (im guessing its a delay/chorus in massive?)
- drop out the ghost (16th) kicks when the bass drops in the first time, bring it back after the small break
- needs some 6/7khz, maybe a ride or splash cymbal? but just VERY lightly

other than those ideas... AWESOME first go!

lol i'm using FL 8 to arrange it, and using some home-made MASSIVE patches for bass, sub-bass etc. The piano thingy is an FM8 preset that's been tweaked a bit, and it's called Airpad.

The drums were just the ones that come in FL8 under the Dance pack.. I EQd and reverbed them all up..

The samples were from www.dailywav.com, and were from Superman and something else hehe.

Just as a side note - anybody know of any good high hat samples that are suitable for Dubstep? The FL8 ones are pretty dire

cheers

Check the production bible, theres some good packs on there.

Anything clean sounding works for me, personally.

cheers :)

so anyway i've been working on it a little more.. i've posted the new version of the song on myspace.

while the structure is almost exactly the same, i've varied the drums a bit, added a percussive melody and fixed the frequency distortion on the bass drop.

tell me what y'all think :)

cheers
