the futility of debate

in my opinion, debate is the most time-wasting, useless thing a person looking for the truth could engage in.
i mean i've seen Dick Cheney "win" debates. does that mean Dick Cheney has an ounce of truth?
is a good lawyer the most truthful?
debates are pissing contests for egomaniacs.

I thought this was going to be a thread about how you're disappointed with people because they don't believe in aliens.

i don't care if people believe in aliens.
i've just got lots of info to share with those who do, and it gets cluttered by those who don't

It all depends on the context and how much the debate is stifled. Dick Cheney will win debates because we wont be asked anything approaching a difficult answer.

so your contention is that difficult questions lead to truth?

i'm a very good debater by the way. i was going to go into corporate law and be rich until i changed my mind senior year in highschool and decided to go to art school. i had a free ride through the university of texas if i wanted it with my grades, class ranking and SAT scores.
i still think it is a complete waste of time though.

They can do. They can also lead to more questions.

Give us a topic then (Preferably about something we all have in common)
Posted: Wed Sep 17, 2008 6:31 pm
by parson
the topic is that debate is futile and has no relation to truth.

So do you believe that truth can only come from an individual? I find that talking to people about something can completely change my view on that subject.

truth comes from all sorts of ways.
debate is not one of them.
