yo, my mate who supplies me with old garage found me some stuff of the Ice Cream label.. its a dark garage sound Im not too keyed up on, but it seems like the kinda shit you can mix with dubstep flawlessly
one tune is by RIP Productions - The Chant
other is Double99 - RIPgroove, which seems to be the same people
is this considered UKG or Speed Garage?
is there other 4x4 labels and artists i should be checking out if I like this kind shit?
pure minimalism, just vocal loops with dubbed out effects and warping basslines

you want to check peeps like Narrows and Jon E Cash mate. Loads and loads of darkside 4x4 shizz.
If you search on Chemical they have a lot of audio, even if the stuff is out of stock.

yeah I like Jon E Cash's 4x4 stuff a lot, im not feeling his newer stuff but some of his older stuff is very rolling and raw
I need to get some mixes of dark 4x4 as finding something decent in second hand Speed or 4x4 garage sites is like a needle in a haystack

Morph -
http://www.myspace.com/morph2baad , the originator
Look out for older stuff by DJ Wire, Bogeyman, Narrows.
I wouldn't say RIP stuff fits in with this though.

All the above. Also DJ Shorty, Shimano, Wesley J, some of DnD's stuff & of course El-B's rolling stuff.

I'd class Ripgroove and The Chant as Speed Garage.

Sirus - Grouch Vocal Mix.
The instrumental is a big tune.

yeh i think so too, i understand that kind of tune to be the archetypal speed garage sound, the term seems to be used to relate to the less US more JA influenced, more druggy, reese basslines and all that kind of vibe... also the stuff which i think had significant crossover
Joe C i have a stunningly good Oris Jay speed garage / 4x4 mix (courtesy of Owen Griffiths) which i'm sure you'd love, i'll try to upload it at some point over the weekend
of the early 4x4/speed stuff I am maybe more into a slightly different shade, Tuff Jam (and anything on Undavybe) are as close as anything to my favourite music ever. plus the more housey RIP Productions stuff, Jeremy Sylvester, Dub Monsters, Booker T, New Horizons etc.
but there is some sick stuff in the druggier reese vein too. on crossover side think you would like the Serious Danger stuff, and some Julian Jonah remixes and maybe 187 Lockdown. some ridiculous underground bits too, early Strickly Dubz / Jeremy Sylvester, KCC & Ty Holden, FX Recordings, 4 Deep Connextion

by the way does anyone know anything about this out of interest...
on a few RIP 12s / mix cds, i've noticed that they use the terms 'Up North' mixes and 'Down South' mixes, North referring to the darker wild reesey tunes, South to the clubby 'soulful' sounds.. is that North/South London, or North/South of England?
i am interested whether at that point ( i think 97/98 ) there was already this kind of distinction, and that up North this stuff was getting so big that early, so much so that it was the 'Up North' sound?

100%
I used to go clubbing in Bagleys many many years ago and this was always played there and listed as Speed Garage. Any of the 99 stuff is too.
Those were the good old days!
