I saw a cheesy tourist video of "ds" in Goa
but you're going north and the west doesn't have great influence there.
I suggest you forget about your comfort zone and enjoy the lassi.
I'm envious, I've long considered India the place to die.

Drink as much of the tap water as you possibly can.

get a lonely planet guide book. All guide books are the same but different. The all suck to an extent, but if anything they can help you decide where you don't want to go.

In Thailand lots of people say it is ' same same, but different '
You ask how is this small ilsand vs, that small ilsand ? they will say same same but different.
I know, not very discriptive, but true to a point.
So, all guide books do the same thing, yet some may have a few different restaurants, hostels, and opinions. My point is, don't argue over which guide book company is better than the other, they are all relatively the same.

Thorntree. It's Lonely Planet's forum, a lot of good activity on there for all over the world. And a Lonely Planet guidebook would be a good idea to bring with you. I usually rely on those pretty heavily when I'm abroad, they've got some really good content, especially for traveling to sketchy/not-commonly-visited areas.

Although Hindu's believe that if you die by the banks of the Ganges/your cremated remnants get thrown into it you go straight to heaven, and in places like Varanasi people as a matter of course take daily dips every morning to "wash away their sins"...
....there's no way in hell I'd get in there. It's fuuuuuuuuuuuuuucking filthy.
