i was lucky to inherit a wicked record collection.which happend to contain numerous axelrod joints, ridiculously good music.

earth rot and messiah are my faves of what i own.
some of his collabs are better though, wicked piece on him with an interview in wax poetics mag a while back. the one where hes dismisses phil spectors "wall of sound" !

well you could say a bit more than that.

i used to listen to a fair bit of axelroad stuff.

the over mic'd drums are fantastic but at times the orchestral jazz/funk is too much for me. in the same way i find musicals impossible to listen to.

he was nothing without the vocal performances from lou rawls and canonball adderly.

i was thinking of axelrod recently in relation to lupe fiasco's 'kick push' - anyone else with me?

his instruemental oddball stuff is where he really shines IMO.

did cannonball adderly sing?i thought he was on sax mostly ??

i'm getting confused. my memory for this stuff isn't as good as it used to be. who was the other guy who did vocals for him???

if its not lou rawls, then you may be thinkin of david mccallum. other than that, he did some stuff with/for the electric prunes.

either way, his discography is abusively deep...seriously deep. he worked with a decent amount of vocalists, behind the scenes.

i think his instrumental orchestration/composition play a larger role in the definition of his sound than his works containing vocals.

either way, hes a badman.
did anyone else catch the solid steel show with him a few years back? pretty damn good interview interspersed with mixing of his tracks.

I haven't heard his vocal stuff, and yeh boom i kinda agree sometimes the full blown orchestral stuff can get on my nerves a bit. but still, the slinky crisp drums and his other trademarks are just perfect for these lazy summer evenings

Got Heavy Axe a few years back, bit cheesy but some good samples to be had - geezer looked a bit porn star in the photo though (was the 70's but even so)

songs of innoncence & songs of experience are dope aswell! heavy influence on the hip hop world (diamond d, madlib,...)
