A keyboard can be very handy, though not always essential if you can be bothered to input things in the piano roll. Generally the keyboard seems to be the easier and quicker method.
I take it your just starting out, so I'd recommend something along the lines of a M-Audio Oxygen 8,

or the Keystation 49 if your looking for more keys,

If your budget allows you to look a little higher, then look at the M-Audio Axiom series.
If I've gone in a completely different direction to what you want/need, then ignore me

no point in spending loads of money at the start and realising that beat making aint for you, i would start of by download a demo of something like fruity, reason what eva, if you like that after a bit go and buy it, you can always just draw shit in for now then if you real get in to it ya can start buying more things eg monitors midi keyboard.
hope that helps

got the 25 key axiom perfect if your not going to be playing full scale melodies etc,
switching octaves gets annoying tho, if i had the space i would go back up to a 49 key.

I was using the Axiom 25 up until recently when it died. The screen on the front kept dying then it was failing to be recognized by my computer before it finally stopped working.
Will probably get the same again or move up to the 49, though the Behringer UMA 25 looks pretty cool...
