next version of cubase

looking to pick up cubase, but just curious when version 4 was released, i.e. will we be expecting a new version soon?
i don't want to drop the cash on cubase 4 today if a new version is gonna hit the shelves in a month. anybody know anything about this?

there isn´t any announcement about a new version yet.
so your on the safe side with cubase 4 mate!

yeah, version 4 is still prity new, think it will be a while before they upgrade it.
but here is a tip, if you buy an old SL version, off ebay or the like you can then buy an upgrade to 4 and it often works out cheaper, check the upgrade costs on steinbergs website first tho.

Yeah, hard to say when, I guess maybe 2009 spring or smth. Maybe later. There isn´t any announcement even about next update for C4, but maybe 4.5.2 was the last one....?!
I'd buy today if i have to.

i found the academic version on eBay for $200, and since my girlfriend is still a student, i can still pick up that one, so it's not a bad deal at all.
the academic version is identical to the standard version, in terms of functionality, correct?

Correct.
Not sure about upgrading from Cubase 4 Edu to Cubase 5 full in future. Should be not a problem.....

they usually offer a $50 upgrade option and then a free upgrade if you purchase the software right before the new version is released.
(well, thats what they did before yamaha bought steinberg)

Steinberg recently released a 4.5 update which adds Halion player and includes several patches for it as well as The VST Sound Collection Vol. I which offers almost 2 GB of new content, sounds and loops produced by top producers. Some pretty good bits and pieces. I doubt there will be a version 5 for quite a while yet.
