Not impressed i liked the photos initialy but the narration spoiled it. This photo journalist has been on the street with these kids taking photos for 3 years and all he can do is highlight the problems on inner city youth that we all know about. Like we didn't know they aren't recieving proper education and that they are having kids too young and are smoking too much weed. Like we didn't know that black youth commits a disproportionate amount of crime. So instead of telling us what we already know and trying to sell a bit of shock value to the middle classes how about some solutions? 3 years and nothing, i think he needs to go back to school.

i thought personally the narration was spot on - he hardly sensationalised what's going on - he let the pictures do the talking.

it's true that anything of this nature is going to be slightly voyeuristic...but i think that's unavoidable if you're looking at a situation thats so far removed from your own.

I'm not saying he sensationalised it but what conclusions were drawn from his THREE years in the life of these youths? As a journalist working on a project surley he could have offered somthing more constructive than: here are some great photos about the shitty life of these kids. Maybe i'm being a bit harsh but i get the bollock ache with this sort of journalism attempting to buy credability with a middle class audience by "sympathising" with "urban youth" but actually taking no resposibilty or action to resolve the problems facing them.

One word bro and thats education. You got to get them interested at a early secondary school level and for that you have to know what they are interested in and cater for it. Perhaps more practical courses as they start their gcses like bricklaying and plastering so the ones that aren't going to uni still have options. (you seen how much cash brickies can make.) Music tech courses more funding for sports etc. If they have education/options they are less likly to repeat the mistakes they see people make around them.

But thats very simplistic. It doesn't address a lot of other factors which influence people's lives. Education is only one of many problems faced by these people.

Going back to the article, i don't think the persons aim was to highlight the problems or use shock value. I think it was just an honest look at the lives of people who aren't usuelly seen. A document. And don't underestimate the lack of knowledge some people have about other people's lives. Just because we are aware of something it doesn't mean it's commen knowledge.

Its far from simplistic its progressive thinking for following generations. Its unsolvable in the short term but what improved education does is stop the same mistakes being made twice. It aint going to help too much a 14yr old now but it will help his kids. When you have knowledge it helps address the other issues that create bad situations. You undertand the responsible parenting is important you realise that a present working dad is important, you know that drugs are a sympton of unhappiness and other options are available and you realise that the gangsta culture which grips youth culture is bullshit. It gives you confidence in your own descions and stops you beeing a sheep.

I know what your saying but the people that aren't aware that this is the reality for a lot of youth must be walking around blind. Maybe i am being to harsh but for a ambitious photo journalist its good collateral to buy himself some credibiliy by doing the "inner city povety thing" without really addressing any issues.

Seems like you have a slightly strange view of what journalism should be about.

Perhaps if you explained your view on journalism and this piece it would help clarify your stance. Leave out the sarky comments though bruv.

I dont really know much about how to solve inner-city youth crime and lack of success for them. nor do i care really...i find dealing with the kinds of attitudes these kids have...and i know its not their fault....says to me...fuck it...go solve your own lives...

But I do know alot of kids who are black, from deprived areas, who because they came from strong, loving, secure families, we're focussed and motivated to go on and study hard and work...and its paying off big time for them now...these same kids who would walk with one trouser leg above the other...becuase it signifies one above the white man..now are making big bucks...purely because they remained focussed and consistent...

its up to YOU as a person to use the education given to you and keep focussed to live your dream...
