ALBUM REVIEW: THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY, 24/7/08
The Italian D¹Arcangelo brothers¹ fourth album for Aphex Twin¹s Rephlex label in ten years, is their most varied, tuneful, pleasing, controlled and subtle. Alternating between Aphex¹s skittish rhythms and more minimal forms of techno, they design textures that variously recall Brian Eno¹s pure ambient tones, Boards of Canada-style wooziness, Global Communication in their prime and more vintage synth operators such as Tangerine Dream. That they¹re influenced by the theories on gravitational harmony of the obscure avant-garde composer Roberto Lupi is the kind of thing which makes people want to apply that horrible label ³intelligent techno², but this is actually music for the soul instead of the head.

On their latest for Rephlex, the loyal Brothers D'arcangelo synthesize praiseworthy tracks bubbling with such nostalgic tension that, much to my amazement and delight, I want to care about IDM all over again. While everyone else seems preoccupied with that old tired is-it-AFX-or-not debate over The Tuss' latest releases for the label, they should be giving it up for these guys instead.
