Scratching over dubstep?

Post by djinn » Tue Nov 04, 2008 7:42 pm

People's thoughts on this?
Im on about a bit of scratching here, not OTT constant on every tune throughout the whole set scratching

Scratching over dubstep sorta ruins it, IMO.

just like mcing, when done well scratching can add so much to a set regardless of what type of music it is, but when not done well it will ruin things quick.

i agree, it adds a nice touch to some songs when done right imo, esp when you add a slight delay affect so it sounds echoey

Time and Ale Fillman do it nicely

If it's done respectfully it can sound alright, just like MC'ing. There's no rule and peoples opinions are based on what they've heard, which right now can't be too much.

Check the latest mix from this guy for a good example:

I think if its done tastefully , kinda soft ,and light scratching on the background sounds ,

Should sound dope...not like DMC battle scratching or sumthin!

maybe if you break it down into a solid hip hop track then i wouldnt mind upfront wild scratching, just for a bit.

Im half way done with an all scratched dubstep album. Drums/Sounds and Bass! played via turntable. I would say at the moment 90% of the tracks are played from the turntable. Also im able to perform some of these tracks live using a loop pedal/turntable.

Solo cuts over dubstep have to be performed real sharp (reverb helps). if your not really sick on the cut then dont do it you will sound shit.

unfortunately i dont get enough bookings to be able to perform this and when I do they have a shit mixer in the club and its impossible to do anything other than str8 up mixing :?

this sounds really interesting, would love to hear that sometime.

but i wouldn't feel if someone would scratch over a normal set. as in drum&bass i always found it kinda akward if someone was scratching over tunes..

i had uk dmc champ 2005, dj muzzell play at an event i ran and his scratching is super sharp and very musical...on serato i think........ripped it up.....whole dubstep set.....unfortunatley he is a bit perfectionist about putting recordings online......

book him i say....

it's all 'Pure Phase' do live (scratch/cut vocals, effects and sounds from vinyl) over live laptop performance with a bespoke live patch.
