Man, downloaded that vid from wrong music a while back, he funny as fuck. Unfortunately the last Wrong Music I visited wasn't anywhere near as funny as usual - breakcore doesn't benefit from being over-serious.

Got the feeling that some of the Shitmat crew had done a "garage" single some time back, but don't remember it being that good. Hawerchuk did a couple of nice glitch-step numbers the other year "Caned Peas/Camel Toe" - one of my mates seemed to think that they sampled one of the arseheads from Blazing Squad (with hilarious results). Played it at a party a few years ago, folks weren't sure if it was the drugs or the music making them fall over.

Breakcore's golden age was quite a few years ago now. Back around 2000 there was a lot of quality stuff being made, and the main purveyors of the sound would be absolutely horrified to hear some of the "comedy" drivel that's being made at the moment.

I thought it was the other way round - although what would I know it's never been my thing. On the contrary the comedy 'fun' element has been lost - not gained - according to purveyors like Mr KFC himself.

Yeah, I agree. Breakcore is such a blatantly comedy music at the best of times that I find it unbelievable that people actually take it seriously (think this may well apply to a lot of dnb too).

Gary's Gruesome Garage, released a couple of months ago with a remix or two. I had it on dubplate for a year or so, was trying to get it signed for Henry to a dubstep label! Ended up on Planet Mu, very funny and well produced...

Nah.. although it depends what you see as breakcore.

I'm refering to stuff like the Hekete sound system, zhark, praxis... 2000 and maybe a couple of years before that. It was kind of like dubstep in that it was firmly based in sound system and rave culture, looking back to better times or whatever. Pissed off with the direction techno and rave was going. It certainly wasn't the least bit comedic, trust me. Heavy stuff, well worth checking out stuff from around that time.

I'm certainly not talking about planet mu etc.

Comedy music is fine.. but it's disappointing to see it taking over an entire genre.

Think they're well versed in the raves, blatant ket-heads most of them. There is/was a big free party scene here, and the gabba massive were well catered for so it wouldn't surprise me.

Gabba? Don't get me started... It's the same thing as breakcore really. They are both reactionary musics posited in response to some perceived or imagined conservatism in the host style/culture, and formally predicated on caricaturing certain aspects and tropes inherent to those styles (techno/jungle/'ardkore...). IMNSHO

Of course there's nothing 'wrong' with being zany, extremist, confrontational and irreverend. It's just that:

a) as an end in itself it gets tired very quickly, and
b) if you've never actually had any investment in, or engagement with the thing your music is largely based on parodying, well then you are simply flaunting your ignorance. You are setting yourself up in opposition to something you know very little about. Sheer hubris.

I think also that a lot of the so-called humour (cynicism?) is actually a nervous reaction and to do with a fear of 'darkness', 'deepness', the sacred, the feminine etc. Easier to find those things laughable than deal
with them. Constant shallowness...

But maybe it's pragmatic - occupy a market niche. The court always needs jesters and children's entertainers.

To be honest I find a lot of gabba tedious (kick drum, drill noise, NEXT...), but for all the people that were taking this hard-as-nails noise seriously, others were finding it very funny indeed. Name how many musical styles actually make you laugh out loud (deliberately) - doubt it's that many. I've personally been bored to death by DJ's doing their "serious" music thing on many an occassion, so it does bring something different to the party (which is essentially about enjoyment, unless you know otherwise).

Cynicism's very easy in an age of consumer superficiality and political bullshit, so in a way I see this as a far more honest reaction to modern life than people give it credit for. Cynicism was the life-blood of punk (whatever your feelings on that might be) and although this is unlikely to cross over to that degree, some things are better confronted with laughter than anger.

As for the fear of the feminine/darkness/sacred/etc - think you might be reading too much into this, and it certainly doesn't reflect the people that are into this music. Too much time spent at blissblog methinks
