on the higher bass parts you can start using stero effects - eg chorus, flanger etc to help fatten. as well as reverbs and delays.

using live 5 i add saturation. sometimes i take the same sound and make two copies - one with the mid and highs and one with lower frequencies. you can add oscilators to both and get interesting effects.
like they all said, add some distortion, maybe even some reverb for the mid-high parts. what i've been learning lately is to separate sounds by frequencies to get more control.

At least with good ol' FL it's pretty handy to route the bass to a send channel. Just don't route it thru mixer, use the send plugin.
Original channel should be EQ'd so that it will only consist of low frequencies, the send can be utilized easily to give the mid/high-whatever some extra punch with delay, distortion, chorus and whatnot.
