calling all spoddy geeks.

Post by alfie » Fri Nov 14, 2008 12:07 am

i'm paranoid i'm going to lose all my computer-based music collection one day, is there a way i can generate a text file of all the subfolders within a file so at least i'll know what i need to re-download?

i've found a way to get a list of all individual files from a folder, but my music is arranged in album subfolders so this is a bit useless.

screen dump the best option at the moment but that would take about 324 years so not ideal

Why don't you just back your shit up to CD/External HDD/Internets?

enqueue all of your music into one playlist on winamp or windows media player, then save the playlist.

when (it WILL happen) your hard drive dies, you'll be able to see a big list of music you can't play. the playlist file should only be a few megabytes i think

Open a command prompt. Go to the root folder of your music collection and type:

dir /s >music.txt

That will very crudely list every file in every folder underneath the directory you're in and stick the results in a text file.

I very nearly lost all my music on Monday. My 1Tb external disk crashed containing 160Gb (10 years collecting) of non-backed up music and nearly 300Gb of tv/movies.

I managed to get it back on Wednesday.

Had to have a little wank to celebrate.

I have the largest music collection here and I have two copies of it (possibly more). 62,353 tunes. On my external HDD and online too so if my host makes backups then erm, thats more than two copies.

If it was Linux you could write an easy for loop to do it. ;)

You can write a loop for any OS. Doesn't have to be linux.

its always people with mp3s that think they've got the most music! nobody that buys records is brave enough to step up and say they've got the most

Well in London with the credit crunch and the high cost of living, it would be stupid to have a large vinyl collection. I think maybe we have 2-3000 vinyls and about 800 CD's - bought and given of course. Not copies.
