To add good miniature effect to your photographs, shoot subjects from a high angle (especially from the air). It creates the illusion of looking down at a miniature model. A camera equipped with a tilt-shift lens, which simulates a shallow depth of field, is essentially all you need to start.

Yeah, definitely a cool effect but you have to know when it can be used. You can see from those pics that some of the people know what they're doing and some don't. Kind of like HDR photos.

I think some of them might be just photoshop manipulated to get the similar effect.

Check out the quay brothers films. You can also do the same effect with Vaseline smeared over your sky/uv filter. There's an adapter you can buy for camcorders now, that gives you similar focus tricks.

yeah im using a 5x4 camera for my degree project and they are bastard things. brilliant results though. if you like the effect of throwing stuff out of focus with the tilt/shift like this check out the artist Olivo Barbieri. you can also buy a lens called a lensbaby that simulates this effect on a 35mm camera. or photoshop i guess.
