Hi everyone

I'm wondering if anyone has this issue of Computer Music magazine with the dubstep tutorial and free sample pack.

I just saw this issue now when it was last months issue. So i'm thinking to ship it from the uk. But if it isn't worth the trouble it could save me the time and money actually I have this dnb edition of it and have to say it didn't really help

imo it was a shite sample pack. richard d james had a few samples on the disc but obviously wasn't putting amazing samples up. The dubstep stuff just includes generic pads and basses and a few shit drum loops and hits at varied speeds. as per fucking usual CM have done a half fuckin arsed job as none of the hits are standardized to 0 Db their all over the shop. not worth it even if you lived in the uk and wernt taking shipping £££ in2 account.

If you are in the US your local Barnes & Nobles should have it soon. The October issue is still on the shelf at the moment.....

basically anything you get free is worth exactly what you paid for it...

I got it for the tutorial, as I had never made dubstep before,

the tutorail is crap, they could have done a much better job and user half the paper.

i agree, worst one i have seen so far. bought every issue for last year and a half, and this was total bollocks really

and it said in the editors note on the first page, that they have never had so many requests to do a feature than what they have for dubstep, (apart from dnb). yet thet still couldnt be arsed to do it properly

I thought the tutorial was pretty rubbish too.

Some of the samples are pretty good though, there's some good drum hits in there for sure.

Not your stereotypical dubstep sounds, but this is probably a good thing, and they are still perfectly usable

samples were alright, i think the problem with the tutorial is that they didnt grasp how open dubstep is as a genre

I thought that the problem was exactly the opposite... they seemed to leave everything open to "basically, do whatever the fuck you want, but here's some ideas" and then just gave you something seriously generic saying "Well, Dubstep's all about making it your own style, innit?".

Dubstep can't be explained in 3 or 4 pages...

Here's all you need to know :

Bass heavy music with a tempo of around 140BPM.

the problems with it for me were the following.........

The did not include midi file for everything so unless you had logic you were stuffed.

Although it is an open ended genre for the purposes of the tutorial they should have at least given a wobble tutorial, and also some tips on making dubby sounds etc. instead they uses a sampled bass line and said.

"unless you know what you are doing Creating your own can be hairy" < not exact qoute.

also the beats in dub step are quite tricky to get sounding good they could have given more examples of drum patterns.

Yea. I thought it was pretty crap to be honest. Never bought the mag b4 and it seems like they rushed the whole thing. Apart from the cover which had a really nice shiny vinyl thing goin on. All the more complex stuff that people struggle with was left out and their answer was just sample stuff off other peoples tunes. Came across as a guide for dubstep written by people who know nothing about the genre!

Lot's of hatred in this thread....

Instead of whining and bellyaching, how about one of you guys write us all a decent guide to dubstep. Don't forget to provide us with several Gbs worth of amazing quality royalty free samples while your about it?

The Production Bible 2 threads still need work!

These magazines are intended to give a first impression on the production-side of things. Other articles go in-depth, but these tutorials are meant to add 'some' basic perspective for those who are starting to produce music. But i admit that 70%of the samplepacks are pretty useless.
And not to mention the amount of samples being re-used every couple of months...

But as said earlier: non-normalised samples or samples not edited/cut well (f.e. with a PROPER annoying 'CLICK' at the end are L.A.M.E.
