Desert Island discs - dubstepforum version

Post by spaceboy » Thu Aug 17, 2006 9:03 pm

Ok - what 3 albums would you take (and why?) - if you were to be marooned on a deserted island?

I'll start:

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd are my all time favourite band and this album...well it blows my mind everytime i hear it. its ingrained in my head after i once did liquid acid and listened to it on my own.

Nas - Illmatic - hiphop in the old days was a big part of my life. and this album originally recommended by my best mate...just killed me...with his lyrics, his philosophy and just the way its made musically.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Musst Musst - I'm asian...and was brought up on qawalli music...which is what this man used to sing...his voice is mesmeric...combined with peter gabriel on this and westernising his whole sound to a certain extent...signified me...eastern originally...living in the west...plus its just bloody awesome...

Bob Marley
kaya

Because it has so many different moods in it, and I think it would sound good in a natural setting like a desert island.

The Rolling Stones
Big hits (High Tide and Green Grass)
Because its got long term listening potential and energetic tunes.

Horace Andy
Skylarking
Because I know I like the dudes voice and won't get bored with it.

cLOUDDEAD - cLOUDDEAD. still sounds like it was made on a desert island. on a desert planet. in another universe.

the microphones - the glow pt.2. good weird isolated music ("i thought i felt your shape but i was wrong..."). one of my favourite albums of all time n all.

godspeed you black emperor! - levez vos skinny fists. good shelter-building music. nah i'm just kidding - just a brilliant brilliant album of amazingly emotional music that never gets old basically.

This seemed easy at first...I am sure I would keep changing this...

1. Clash on Broadway - The Clash (enouhg big Clash rhythms and all their dubby stuff)

2. Two Sevens Clash - Culture (no explanation required)

3. Screamadelica - Primal Scream (for those heady 90's weatherall remix memories)

Jeez..can we just make it a top 10?!

Augustus Pablo - Original Rockers.. This guy is a G. He took the melodica (a childs toy, essentially) and poured soul into it. Up Warrika Hill is a persy

Edan - Beauty and the Beat.. Will never get tired of this album. A psychadelic masterpiece. pure imagery. I went to see him perform at the jazz cafe last year and he blew me away. Best gig i've ever been to. at one point he beat juggled with one hand, whilst rappin into a mic with his other... think theres a vid on youtube of him doin that..

third ones tricky but i'll say Jeff Buckley - Sketches. not as good as grace as an album, but a great collection of songs, esp. disc one.

Cop Shoot Cop - White Noise
Remarc - Sound Murderer
Herb Alpert - 50 Golden Greats

Should make sure that if any other fucker turns up they'll take their chances with the sharks.

Oh, and my chosen item would be a power-boat, surprised no-one ever goes for this option
Hmm....
