Some freaky hardware designed by a bud o' mine.

He's an IDM artist and has designed a couple of his own synth modules, circuit bent 303's and drum machines etc. This is his latest exploration. A 5 (neon) analog oscillator , control voltage synth. The electric impulses get passes through an array of control osc. so that freq. and response are constantly being juggled. It lights a neon tube in synch to the pulsed output. Pretty damn wild IMO.

I have no idea what that is but it is bad ass.

I would love to see some video of that in action.
been thinking alot about intuitive hardware that is 'playable', hard to describe - this looks like something I envisioned.
f'n wicked, super impressed.

He's just incorporated it into his live rig, so i've not heard it truly in action, just through the phones in a sample set. It's really quite sci-fi sounding. I'm trying to get the setup together to do a streaming show.
Stay tuned.

Ditto!
Really interested to see this one at work....

Yeah check it mate. he and I are trying to get a venue setup to do a Chinese Opera Live IDM set.
We've got 2 emperor's robes and whole host of opera masks, a couple of tiko drums and chinese gongs. even 2 large dragon chains with full on moving light up eyes and shit!
It's gonna the asian IDM opera king-fu techno set to end all asian IDM opera king-fu techno sets.

Control voltage synths are weird yo. So this thing has some wild mathematical processing where 1 octave is a 2 volt discharge, meaning in notation it's creating steps divisible by 6. Not your normal musical chord formation.
But, since it's an analog control device, modifying the attenuators is as simple as popping in a new control knob with a different sensitivity setting.
There are some inherent difficulties with this dude. Since it's a discharge generated loop, it can actually get into a negative feedback loop and cancel it's own signal out. It's not easy to know how or when it's going to happen either.

Live PA set being recorded this pm with the new control voltage synth, and the newly incorporated Emu world drum module. I hope to post up some sample tracks later on!
Stay pumped.

m'k. here's a sample off the thing so you can see what I mean by raw electric signal morphing. This is just 8 sec long so it doesn't really begin to feedback on itself much yet, but you get the idea.
8 second sample
And here's a sequence post mix down. Not something I spent much time on, just wanted to hear it's self morphing mathematical melody making capabilities.
5 osc control voltage synth
The guy who designed it is working with the engineer to help build an analog sequencer that would use a similar construction principle. Pretty wild for a 1 of a kind mad genius prototype.

Wild! I thought it was a modded pinball machine at first.
