robot throat noise

right, i've been trying to work out how people (mostly in d'n'b at the moment) are makin this kind of robot 'yuuuuuy' noise.

if you're into your d'n'b, i'm talking about the sound that Heist is absolutely caning at the moment in all his tracks, for exapmle in Book 'Em (listen here for what i'm chattin about http://download.breakbeat.co.uk/tracks/ ... ookem.aspx).

i know how to make that sound in massive by oscillating the width position of some of the digital/hybrid waveforms like Deep Throat, but it doesn't give that really grainy, atonal sound that he (and others) seem to get. i'm guessing everyone is doing it from the same synth or preset. any ideas?

thanks

if your gettin near that sound with massive all you gotta do is distort it play with the parameters a bit n you'll get it, try frohmage on it

hmm im not so sure man, its a pretty different sound. i dont think post processing the synth is gonna get it there tbh. ive heard it in enough tunes to suspect that it is a preset on something, or really easy to make on some vst synth. i use albino3 and massive but havent been able to do it on either.

There are a ton of sounds in Massive that sound like that. I have about 6/7 on mine. For starters just go to the browser and click "Vocal" (if its not in there then you might need to buy the Massive Expansion Packs. Then of course tweaking them, but the sounds are definitely a preset.

Dunno if it's of any use but in the Malstrom in reason there's a sound wave called Effect:Throat or vowels or somethign like that
If you set the motion down all the way and fuck around with the filters i'm sure you could get something like that

It's all about sticking S+H onto the osc after the filter try something like this bro
http://www.mediafire.com/?mytdwymnzdw

Also try getting rid of the resonance on the filter and try out different osc add some bitcrusher and see what you come up with

yea i thought (talking about heist here) he might have just made a really empty kind of formant sine wave synth with maybe a saw underneath or something, then used some distortion and a formant vowel filter. still yet to get it myself tho. thanks for replies so far, gonna try some different approaches

lmao @ Depone very witty
Stick the file in your presets folder (you'll hopefully know where this is if you have the program) Open up massive and type robot in the browser. The preset is pretty simple hence the name but hopefully give you somewhere to start.

As a side point, I've found that a decent way of giving synth sounds a vowelly sound is to layer a bit of your actual voice making the right sort of sound and then heavily processed. I haven't listened to the exact effect you're after (at work), but it's worth bearing in mind.... not all your sources have to be from the synth. Microphones are well useful!

if u have access to thor then its dead simple. saw wave with formant filter (edit to taste). n then slam on a skream 4 with digital distortion. (this is in reason btw)

Try shoving your sound you've come up with through a vocoder and experimenting. Those calling for formant filter may well have reason too!

Extreme settings in a pitch shifter or time stretcher such as the one in Audition.

Depone wrote:Sound very similar to my track Part-Time Funk ( http://www.myspace.com/deponedub ) I made a custom wobble bass in albino, did some saturation, compresson eq. and used a bit crusher and then a vowel filter to get the ayeee eiiieee talking effect ( http://www.sugar-bytes.de/content/produ ... db688571fe# )

Is that what your looking for?
thats pretty much how u make it. the key factors if ur makin ur own is usin a vowel/formant filter and a bit crusher/digital distortion. the quality of the robot wobble just depends on the the tone of the wobble u start with n the speeds of the attack and delay on the filter envolope

p.s part-time funk is pretty live
