There are cults everywhere in the world however the U.S. seems to produce alot of them.

The site below is great resource for information on them:

http://www.rickross.com/

The thing is the cult he ran is a just a little more extreme version of the LDS- IMO.(church of latter day saints). Is the LDS active in England Whistla?

Here they they ride around on bicycles in dress slack, white shirt, tie an they have a name tag that sayselder so and so.

I am not defending this dude but people are in the U.S. are supposedly innocent until proven guilty. So I would like to see how this plays out.

I hate that we share the first name though.
Ugh.

although the church appears active to sum degree (they hav a UK website and London Temple -> http://www.lds.org.uk/content/blogcategory/72/68/ )they are nowhere near as big as Jehovahs Witnesses here (ive never seen one, but seen jehovahs witnesses a fair bit)
i jus find the whole Mormon thing interesting/odd/fascinating/bizare etc.. the most advanced super power with these really "odd" clusters of people that reject the lot of it. also i guess my general lack of knowledge about these "Latter Day Saints" makes the whole thing interesting to me for sum reason
;)

Yea I agree with you whistla, the mormon religion and how it developed is interesting.

I rented a room from a family of Mormons at one point. They worked on converting me but I wasn't having it.

There are also sects in the US that completely reject modern living, (electricity, phones, cars etc...), like some of the Amish:

Big Up dub-u for the amish link!
i had no idea the Amish had such a long history, the whole Pensylvania Dutch thing i never really understood (they are actually mainly German, not dutch ...interesting....)
i think the thing that is so facinating is also the fact that they reject modern society and live apart from it (the interest coming from the mysteriousness/lack of info if u get me)
any other US cults of interest?? lol
whatever happened to the Moonies?? (no not Goonies, MOONIES  )

Link?

I am not really down with their religion - but, imo, allegations like that need to be backed up by a at least a reference or two!

They are still around. In fact they have alot of power in the US- the Moon family owns a conservative new paper called the Washington Times. Although they are not a cult that started in the US the leader of the Moonies- Rev. Moon is from Korea.
They have been somewhat succesful in getting close to lawmakers in Washington as well. I'll dig up some references for you later Whistla.

I have been invited to one of their "retreats" I of course
said no!

actually, that's true. It's for that very reason why that little spot in Utah has one of the highest incidences of Fumarase Deficiency, an otherwise rare birth disorder. It's believed that the matriach of one of the original families (the Barlows and the Jessups) carried the gene, and is perpetuated due to so much intermarriage between the two families.

Here's a good article that talks a bit about the disease, LDS, and a bit of the history of the Barlows and Jessups:

Check this freak out too, not quite sure what teachings have been adapted to become quite this hateful, but not sure this is quite what Jesus would do.
