Most useful production technique

What have you learned that has helped you the most with your production? so far for me it would probably be layering up drums and eq'ing different parts so they fit together better in the mix

actually do some work on my tunes instead of starting something and then getting distracted by forums.
but seriously, I'm still learning a lot, but been learning a hell of a lot about EQing recently so that has helped!

Learning how compression works, and the various ways to use/abuse it has enabled me to achieve a tighter sound!

Another technique is.... Don't take it to seriously, its sposed to be fun but theres a difference between fun and stupid..Do what you want.. 'ell even some of my well received tunes were just 8 samples... and a day messing about with filtering..Not blowing my own trumpet sayin' I am a big producer but.. you know. Most of the shit whats said here is mental more than actual 'techniques' apart from about compression.. so instead of going about and being like "LOL CASPA AND RUSKO BASS HOW DO I MAKE" just start basic, kick, snare, hats, sub, melody and write some tunes and develope it over time.. I have been making dubstep now for like.. 3-4 years and I have only JUST got to the point where I am happy with my style..and I knew if I started slow and picked things up along the way, it would of been 1.5 years instead of 3..

splitting up a sound/synth into different bussess and eq'in them seperatly to get a fuller more deep sound

buy a little notebook and keep it with you 24/7. When a little idea comes up you can write it down.

I've been doing this for years. I have a little Moleskin jobby that all my creative ideas go into.
Keeping ideas recorded is good for two reasons, one it allows you to think about other things without having to remember every idea you've ever come up with. Two, it can be good to spot related ideas which can build up into new projects

oh yeah psp in my pocket loaded with samples and
www.psprhythm.com helps me get ideas and melodies down along with notebook and construct rough ideas for tunes to import into my pc
