I saw them at the hippodrome a couple of years back - noise was intense but perfect. It made my nose wobble and me and the missus kept giggling cos it made our big fat tummies shake.

One of the most impressive acts today, IMO.

new album coming-
Ten years old, Sunn O)))’s seventh album, Monoliths & Dimensions is coming out of the vortex May 18 on Southern Lord. Fans of walls of sounds, loud noises, and feedback, mark your calendars, because this album is promising to be a doosey just given the sheer size and shape of the ensemble surrounding it. The band, however, emphatically states that this is not "SUNN with strings." Instead, they "took an approach concentrating on more of allusion toward the timbre of feedback and the instruments involved, so the piece is really illusory, beautiful and not entirely linear."

Not sure what that means, but I do know the facts, and the facts are that, in addition to Oren Ambarchi and Attila Csihar (man, I hope his mom named him that on her own), this time they are working with Eyvind Kang (who has played viola in or with the likes of Bill Frisell, Secret Chiefs 3, Mike Patton, Blonde Redhead, and Laura Veirs to name a handful), Julian Priester (who has worked with Sun Ra, John Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock), Dylan Carlson (Kurt Cobain’s total BFF and lead guitarist/singer/basically only constant of droney band, Earth), and Stuart Dempster (a horn player who not only won the Guggenheim in ’81, but is also credited for introducing the didjeridu to North America) as well as three upright bassists, French and English horns, a harp and flute duo, piano, brass, reed and strings ensembles, and there’s rumor of a partridge in a pear tree, but that has not been confirmed as of yet. Oh, and there’s also a Viennese woman’s choir led by Jessika Kenney.

Monoliths & Dimensions tracklist:

1. Aghartha
2. Big Church [megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért]
3. Hunting & Gathering (Cydonia)
4. Alice

Made a thread on these a while back...

I couldn't get tickets for love nor fucking money. Really wanted to go. Grimrobe demos were played, I hear?

Saw them with Boris December 2007, and I will not stop telling people that it was the single greatest thing I have ever heard.

I prefer the droney stuff. Flood and Feedbacker are equally amazing. Smile's a pretty good album as well, along with Rainbow and Dronevil. Not too keen on Pink, to be fair.

Yeh it was the GrimmRobe Demos...

I was lucky enough to get guestlist. Tickets sold out super quick.

Was the gig with Boris in Kentish Town (with Earth)?? Heard a lot of good stuff about that show.

That was the first time i have managed to catch their performance - It made a real impression on me...they played for close to 2 hours. It sounded like Corsica Studios was going to implode...

Yeah, man, they are seriously loud. It was, it was the gig in Kentish town. Best shit ever.

I know! There was only one site selling them, and they had +50 in stock, so I said "Nevermind, I'll order one tomorrow" and then they were all gone :'(

I'm not too keen on Earth, though. Especially the newest album. One song sounds like the rest, get me.

Earth 2 trumps anything though. I was a big Sunn fan back in the day tho. They were unbelievable in 2004. Seen them 4 times in total.

The magic died for me about the same time that I first heard Midnight Request Line, thankfully that lead me onto more bass-heavy music to feed my addiction

If anyone wants to spend ridiculous prices for over-rated stuff then PM me, I need to get rid of my old crap. :D

I got a US edition 1/100 Khanate DVD from about 2005 I want rid of particularly. (related)

back in the day I sold some dude the official Sunn live CDR for £80. Amazing!

I remember the second time Sunn plyed Newcastle and Greg Anderson was at me mates house snorting some Ket someone had give him and asking why his speed had put him on a downer!!

Deffo. If you've still got it, I'll message you around June time, when all my festivals are done.
