I used to listen to alot of dubstep a couple of years ago when it was going through it's really minimal techno kind of phase. Then I sort of stopped paying attention for a bit.

Went to see Benga last night (in Cork, Ireland) and it was awful. All the tracks got straight into the heavy metal baseline right at the start, you'd get maybe 4 bars of a gap somewhere in the middle of the track, then back to bludgeoning you with base. Most of the tracks were about 2minutes long. It was like hip hop mixing. All the House raving locals were loving it. Attention deficit disorder music. What happened to rewinds?

After about an hour of that he eventually started playing some tunes that had a bit of a build and dynamic to them before hitting you with the basey goodness. I mean, the really minimal stuff got monotinous too, but in an attempt to get everybody on the floor moving some dubsteps starting to get alot cheesier than anything the much maligned UK Funky genre is putting out. I'd rather listen to gabba techno.

Interesting thoughts. I know the first couple of dubstep nights I went to I was completely blown away. However I do agree that just slamming you in the face all night with heavy metal wobblers is too much. Sets imo should build and have drama otherwise you just get worn out and bored.

You should pop in to Cyprus avenue for World Bass Culture yesterday. We always trying to build up a nice set starting from original steppers, roots of dub advancing to heavy shit right at the end (4 mc's in the place!) Pop in there next month on the 27 of March bruv. Bless

Whenever I use to play a set, I use to start slowish with some dubstep, move onto rave/techno/house, drum n bass and finally end on jungle/breakcore.

I think it's all dependant on what you like, there's so called "badman" dubstep such as rusko, and more chilled dubstep as in caspa, most prefer one to the other. It's just a case of preferance. I personally love a bit of filthy badman dubstep.

Caspa is chill...interesting take.

sounds more like a the djs fault than anything else. Plus he cant be pleasing everyone. Plus you should at least appreciate the sharp rise in gash at dubstep events since this has been goin on.

I have a girlfriend so I can't really chase gash. That said, there were lots of attractive women out there so no complaints on that part. Personally I'd find it easier to pull women at a bad gig because they'd all be out in the smoking area where you can chat them up without having to roar into their ears. But everybody has their own approach. Maybe my skanking isn't high grade enough to pull women.

I'd massively dissagree with the idea that danceable = good music. I think it's a balance. What I'm complaining about basically is lack of variety. A set should build. You can't maintain a high point right through the set. You have to build it up over a period. Start lighter and slower, then go to heavy and loud. If it starts heavy and loud then you've nowhere left to go and it just gets monotinous.

Good DJ's tease you a little bit. They play with your expectations. Like a good woman. The girl could chuck all here clothes off immediately and that would be grand and all, but I'd rather a striptease. There, that's a nice cylical analogy to finish my post with.
