We had an argument about this not too long back in SNH, and I think the settled-upon conclusion was 'Sampling'.

That's not a hard sample to spot!
Best Metallica sampling remains DJ Shadow's Number Song. That tune pwns.

Sure hope so man. They've come with how many releases now that were entirely hook and melody someone elses work. It's only fair they at least get a bit of shit for it if not a cease and desist.

This depresses me a bit. It's all money, and legality. It's not as if you could even recognize straight away that Saxon had sampled Metallica...it's just a bit harsh, brah.

I think its hilarious that chase and status will go ahead a sample/rework a riff from a band as pervasive as metallica, then have the nerve to tell other people they can use the same sample they have used for eastern jam (see jayou - western jam)...

honestly i dont think it was sampled from the metallica song . in the metallica song its very obviously a guitar with some effect on it to makte it sound like a sitar , very simple. but in the chase and status tune it's a noticeably different instrument being used
i think what you have here is a case of neither of them having much knowledge about indian music scales , both of them just coming up with a very simple riff that sounded bad ass but couold obviously be recreated very easily by anyone fucking around with that arabic/indian/egyptian scale
