Twitter - Why The Big Hype???

So.....
I joined Twitter....
How did this site get so big?? It's not offering anything I can't already do on Myspace or Facebook (if you choose to use facebook for music).
Am I missing something here?? It's more difficult to use in terms of instant messaging, and its only status updates.... It's like an unsociable social networking tool.

I guess this is enough reason actually.
People's obsession with the lives of celebrities is unhealthy

I have recently been trying it out as a replacement for an rss blogfeed reader thing, which is what i was previously using to read the news+blogs etc.
It seems all the decent blogs and news sites have twitter, and there are some heads on twitter who don't have blogs, so in that respect i'm finding it a bit more useful than a blog reader.
If you don't really read many blogs or have a massive group of people who you regularly need/want to communicate with it is pretty shit. and you're right about the communication interface - it's completed unintuitive and takes a bit of getting used to.
edit- oh also he royal shaqness is on it, which is as good a reason to use it as any other i can think of

yea seriously, have only seen a jpeg of snoop's page from that whole eastern jamgate, but it looks pretty swag. Just a load of drones breading up c-class clebs, not implying that snoop drizzle isnt A class of course. How silly of me.

i might sign up, from wot i understand it has a more practical use than facebook and myspace in some respects cos u can follow news channels and publications / journalists etc which is easier than clicking around a load of pages..
seems to lack the vanity of similar sites unless you count the endless semi famous twats who need another way to bang on about the taste of their lunchtime sandwich.

its a good way to receive news as its happening, during Wmc i used it to know what was going on at the parties i wasnt currently at and to see if i should go to them or stay put, following @12planet and @jessjubilee was a riot as well cause they are always clowning

It's great for near real-time news/blog aggregation, I usually check twitter before my RSS reader these days as a URL and 140 characters is about all you need to see if a story is going to be of interest to you. For person to person communication or "Plastician can't wait to see simply red on saturday night" type status updates it's pointless though. I've no idea why so many people follow Jonathan Ross.
Oh and there is nothing more revolting than seeing people flirting with each other on twitter.
"Reuters reporter Alexei Oreskovic recently authored an interesting blog post about the demographics of Twitter users. What he discovered was that 18-24 year olds, the traditional social media early adopters, are actually 12 percent less likely than average to visit Twitter (Index of 88 ). It is the 25-54 year old crowd that is actually driving this trend. More specifically, 45-54 year olds are 36 percent more likely than average to visit Twitter, making them the highest indexing age group, followed by 25-34 year olds, who are 30 percent more likely."
So it's used more by older folk with a bit of power, not by kids with fuck all to do but chat shit.
