Tell me whats a good Plugin to check/what the plugin is best for (Drums etc?)?

PLEASEeeeeeeee! :D

I've read in this forums that the Neve88Rs, Plate 140, LA-2A/LA-3A, Dimension D are the ones to test.

I've already played with the Mix Essentials that the card came with... and I can already hear the difference in the CS-1 Channel Strip and the RealVerb Pro, which seems to be very pleasing to the ear already :)

From reading (lurking) in this forum, i've noted that Macc and Paradigm X gave some really good feed back, so cheers for them in advance, it's been a great read!
But more info and user feed back would be appresh from a new UAD2 user! (me!)

cheers in advance!

Bit hard as theyre all awesome

Drums - Comps - 1176LN/33609/VCA VU. Any EQs, all good, 1081 or 1073.
Bass - 1073 (eq) / LA2A / Pultec (youve got this already ! - check it out) 8)
Pads/Percussion etc - Fairchild

Special FX - Cooper Time Cube is mint, maccs loves dim d, im not that arsed TBH. Transient shaper is unlike anything else. Moog filter (& distortion) is badder than jesus. RE201 is just awesome, dub delays (bit short tho - UA have an annoying habit of only replicating the original, never extending. Plaste 140 is the best software reverb known to humanity.

Theyve just released all the SSL stuff ive not demoed yet.... cant afford em.

Just demo 2or 3 at a time, see how you feel. EG LA2A/LA3A then 33609 vs VCA VU. All dead easy to use but sound very different. 33609 is a beast !

Be prepared to be very skint.

And join the UAD forums, very helpful.

how much you looking to spend as well.

this month is a promo - 10% off 1, 15% off 2 and 20% off 3or more .

Theyve been v generous with sales and free vouchers recently - prob credit crunch.

Honestly you cant really go wrong, theyre all sick, but depending on what you want to spend, and assuming you have no other great plugs and want a bit of everything, id say pultec pro (so cheap), la2a, and plate would be the first 3 to pick up. But let us know what you have, want and are willing to spend (beware, UAD is like crack)...

Theres just so many good ones tho, the new Harrison eq was sick bit expensive tho. Waiting for a sale.

I noticed that you have mentioned a few plugins from the "Neve Classic Console Bundle MKII" which can also be found in the Nevana 64 (in which i've also been looking at getting later on).

Do you happen to know what the "Nevana 64"'s claimed "The Nevana 64 offers 64 Channels* of the Neve 88RS console @44.1/24." actually means?

I've asked the local dealer if the Nevana 64 comes with a internal mixer (much like the main mixer in Logic) but he had no idea what i was asking and couldnt tell me anymore.

Yep! this is my next step! :)
thanks a lot for your reply Paradigm X, always a good read when you and Macc replies to the forum.

It means something like "64 mono 88rs's with eq and comp enabled only and loadlock disabled" or summat, details are buried somewhere on UAs site.

Some UA plugs eg 88rs, Cambridge, RE201, use more or less dsp depending on what parts are activated eg eq/comp/gate/filters. Load lock means the most DSP ever needed is allocated. This means you can get less overall, but you wont run out of dsp if you want to enable an EQ that wasnt there before.

You can choose.

The nevana is only a uad2 card with all the neve plugs - might well work out cheaper to buy the neve consoles pack when sales are on - like now ! I bought this pack, cheapest way to get all neve plugs. i kind of got the 1081 for free. Thats the least impressive of em all TBH, dont use much, but a very good basic eq. 88rs is great on everything, has a great cumulative effect, some people use on all channels, even without altering (it does alter the sound slightly even when set 'flat'). Creamy and warm. Highly dsp efficient too! 1073 is the balls out EQ.

So whats youre budget and what nice plugins (uad or otherwise) do you already own. What (EQ/Comp/Special FX) are you mainly looking at, and most importantly, whats you budget

Ben

:)

edit - if youre super clever, you can buy the pultec pro for cheap, and any others and get the bigger discount ! 8)

ah thanks for the tips!

anyone else wanna share their opinions about their favorite plugins?

I'm going to test the UAD 4k Channel Strip and the Neve 88Rs and see what the differences are. Would be interested to hear as I've read read great stuff about the Neve 88Rs, but not yet anything major on the 4k Channel Strip.

2 big threads on ua forums and gearslutz re the SSL stuff.

The demo videos got pulled the day after the launch. it was a complete surprise, normally UA either say, or hint at new releases.

I just cant afford to demo. i always end up buying what i demo, 9 times out of ten, so need to wait til i can afford.

Youll get a lot more instances of the 88rs than the ssl.

I have a PCI UAD-1 and the following plugins :-

LA2A, 1176LN, 1176SE, Fairchild, Putec & Pro, The CS-1 (obviously), Plate140, Dreamverb, Cambridge EQ, Nigel etc

As I don't have much DSP I stick to the plugs above and don't worry too much about lusting for a Neve console in my studio. For me, the Pultec's, Cambridge and LA2A are the foundations of my mixing and I can easily run a project with just one card. I also use the Plate140 a lot for reverb which if you like quality verbs, at least demo it.

I don't use the 'full' 1176LN much as the sub range gets smeared and lost by it which interestingly doesn't happen with the SE version. Use the SE for full mixes or low bass imo.

Fairchild is nice but you really need to understand how to use it. Again, I think it robs a touch of low end so bear that in mind but over a drum buss it can work wonders. Over at the UADforums there are some good stickies with some ideas and techniques to try out which sort of sets you up mentally for its uses and non uses as imo it can't always be used. Sorry if that sounds vague but when you use it like other compressors, its hard to hear anything magic but used correctly in the right context/material etc it will sound awesome.

Pultec's are stupid EQ's imo but I mean that in the highest regard. I challenge anyone to make the sound thru it worse than without it!!!! You can't, no matter how much you boost or where, it always sounds better to my ears. The amount of boost you can apply is scary and it stays musical.

Cambridge has a clean sound but the filters are the shit. Cleaning up tracks in a project is a joy and the amount of slopes available mean you can always find the right blend.

I have used the Precision series in demo and they are very good but I didn't buy as mastering is for others 8)

Anyway, just a few of my humble opinions on the very wonderful world of UAD :D
