DAWs advice please

Post by s & m » Thu Apr 23, 2009 5:28 am

hey I know this has been posted soo many times I really do apologize if this topic is getting really old for some people I'm just asking for a little bit of advice. I have been using FL studio 7 for a long time now, and out of curiousity or maybe frustration (or both) I want to try something different. I've messed with Ableton and had a really difficult time figuring it out. I like reasons sounds but the sequencer i do not like. Can someone recommend me a DAW to try that maybe wouldnt be super overwhelming coming from an FL user prospective?

Thanks and again sorry to keep bringing this up.

I can give two advices:

1. Try every DAW that has demo version and choose one that suits your needs.
2. Learn the software you like. It may seem difficult at first but it will pay off.

pick one that you like and stick at it

when you first use ableton and not touched it before, use the lessons
i made the mistake of trying to do stuff without doing the lessons. this was a mistake and put me off it for 2 years.
i decided to take another look properly and do the lessons.
it all became clearer and now im loving it

I'd wager an M&M that you won't like any app if you don't spend the time to learn it, ie, not making music and fumbling along, but actually committing to memory all relevant keyboard shortcuts and all the rest.

Get FL8, really. Why the hell is a lot of people using FL7 still?

Ableton is so sick. The only thing I don't like is sometimes when I bring in a sound (sample, drum hit, etc.)...its minimum tempo sometimes is still higher than the project tempo...or the vice versa...and can't be lowered. So then I gotta go back into FL (for drums) and put the project tempo of the drum pattern to something lower. Weird.

Here is a solid one.

Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Well I have successful pulled 2 people using fruity loops to Ableton Live. It is hands down the most effective interface out there..I have tried most other DAWS.. Nothing else comes close..
Check out the new Ableton 8.

Is there a demo of cubase 5???
Not sure was it serious Q or not, but no, there is no demo and probably will never be.

You must not be warping your drums right.. Try setting the warp marker on the start on the sample.. Right click warp BPM.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've been using FL studio for about 5+ years now...not religiously or anything but I feel like I have a pretty good handle on things, but I know there is so much to be explored. I haven't upgraded to 8 because honestly I don't have the money and I really dont want to mess around with loading all my VSTs all over again...it was a big pain in the ass to begin with. I will give Ableton another shot, I've been hearing so many good things about it.
